Chapter 22 - Grace Turns Five

Grace was five when I finally told her why I had a scar near my shoulder from where tubing adhesive and skin breakdown had once been.

Not graphic.

“Mom was very sick when you were in my tummy. Some people who were supposed to help made unsafe choices.”

“Daddy?”

“Yes.”

“Did he love me?”

The question broke me.

“I don’t know what he felt. I know love has to include safe choices.”

She accepted because five-year-olds accept truths adults spend decades resisting.

Grace had no developmental delays.

She was small.

So was I.

She hated peas.

Loved dinosaurs.

Normal.

That was the best ending medicine could give.
