Chapter 20 - Maya’s Guilt

Maya carried guilt for years.

“I should have come to the house.”

“No.”

“I should have called police after Ryan answered your phone.”

“No.”

“I knew something was wrong.”

“You knew I was sick.”

“I believed video.”

“So would I.”

She cried.

We went to therapy together once because she needed hear from professional that hindsight creates false certainty.

If she had called police early, maybe things would have changed.

Maybe Ryan would have explained.

Maybe I would have been forced to say everything was fine.

Maybe investigation would have begun.

No one knows.

I refused to turn survivor story into accusation against everyone who failed to be psychic.

Ryan and Margaret were responsible.

Not Maya.

Not doctors who saw curated telehealth images.

Not subscribers who genuinely believed staged clips, though those who suspected and reported did something valuable.
