Chapter 13 - The Federal Prosecutor
Leah Grant did not prosecute my case.
She kept promise.
Because we had a prior professional relationship, even limited, she referred federal components to Assistant U.S. Attorney Nathan Cole.
Leah later testified only about receiving my emergency stream and referral actions if needed.
Nathan met me after Grace was born.
He was methodical.
“Emily, federal case will not cover every bad act.”
“I know.”
“State prosecutors are handling physical confinement and assault allegations.”
“Okay.”
“Our office is examining electronic distribution, payment fraud, identity/consent misrepresentations, and related obstruction.”
“What about Margaret?”
“She is subject of investigation too.”
“Because account in her name?”
“Among other evidence.”
Then:
“Do not measure justice by number of charges.”
That sentence helped.
I wanted one enormous indictment that described seven months perfectly.
Law does not work that way.
Charges are boxes.
Life is not.
State case could say unlawful imprisonment and assault.
Federal could say wire fraud.
Medical records could say malnutrition.
None alone said:
May you like
I was pregnant and afraid every night.
But together they were enough to act.
