Chapter 15 - The House Was Not Free

Margaret told everyone she took us in “for free.”

Financial records disagreed.

Ryan had transferred $1,900 monthly from our joint account to Margaret labeled household care.

I did not know.

Our account had been funded partly by my salary before leave and short-term disability benefits.

After my leave, Ryan redirected deposits.

He also used my health reimbursement account for legitimate medical expenses.

Some proper.

Some questionable.

No giant theft.

But he had spent around $38,000 of marital funds on channel equipment, advertising, transfers to Margaret, and personal expenses while telling me we were broke.

The channel revenue did not support us.

It subsidized the system imprisoning me.

In divorce, forensic accounting mattered.

Ryan’s lawyer initially claimed certain channel equipment was marital property.

My attorney stared at him.

Eventually that claim disappeared.
