Chapter 10 - Why No One Came Sooner

My mother had died when I was nineteen.
My father died two years before pregnancy.
No siblings.
That isolation mattered.
My closest friends scattered across states after college.
Ryan slowly became the center.
When I moved to Margaret’s house, I still texted friends.
Then my phone disappeared.
Ryan began answering from replacement device:
Emily is exhausted.
Emily needs space.
Doctors want less stimulation.
She’s sleeping.
Pregnancy is hard.
My coworkers sent cards.
Margaret brought some upstairs.
Others vanished.
Maya called twice.
Ryan answered once.
“She’s resting.”
Maya later told me his tone bothered her.
She emailed.
No response.
She considered welfare check.
Then received a short video of me saying:
“I’m okay. Just really sick. Please don’t worry.”
Ryan filmed it.
I had been threatened with loss of nutrition.
Maya believed me.
Why wouldn’t she?
I looked into camera and said okay.
That lesson hurt.
