Chapter 9 - The Promotion They Put on Hold
Westbridge kept my promotion technically effective but restricted access while investigation continued.
My salary increase processed.
My duties did not.
That distinction felt humiliating.
I sat in hotel suite on paid leave while colleagues ran projects I had spent years building.
Some texted.
Most did not.
Corporate investigations create fear.
One analyst named Jenna wrote:
I don’t know what’s going on, but I saw dinner. I’m sorry.
I answered:
Thank you. I can’t discuss investigation.
Margaret, my supervisor, called only through approved HR channel.
“You earned promotion.”
“I know.”
“Then don’t resign because you’re embarrassed.”
“Sarah said same.”
“She’s smart.”
“You know her?”
“No. I know resigning while under investigation makes everyone’s life harder.”
Fair.
I asked:
“Do you think I did it?”
She paused.
“I think evidence should decide.”
That answer hurt.
Then comforted.
She did not give loyalty speech.
She gave fairness.
Three weeks later, audit committee issued interim determination:
No evidence Valeria Hernández knowingly participated in vendor scheme.
Her credentials and signature were misused.
She remained witness.
Paid leave ended.
I returned.
People stared.
Of course.
I walked through lobby with swollen bruise faded yellow.
My office had new nameplate:
VALERIA HERNÁNDEZ
DIRECTOR, STRATEGIC PLANNING.
I touched it.
Then went inside.
No applause.
