Judge imposed eighty-seven months federal custody.
Seven years three months.
Not twenty.
Not life.
Restitution jointly and severally allocated with co-defendants where legally appropriate, adjusted for recovered assets.
Forfeiture:
Accounts.
One investment property purchased partly with proceeds.
Vehicles traceable in part.
No magical seizure of everything Teresa ever owned.
Mauricio spoke.
“I was angry at Valeria for succeeding.”
The courtroom went quiet.
He continued.
“I told myself Westbridge was big enough not to notice. Then I told myself I was just taking what procurement already wasted. Then I told myself Colin was worse. Every story made next invoice easier.”
Then:
“When she got promoted, I felt like she was becoming proof I had failed.”
I looked at him.
He finally said:
“I hit her because I wanted to make her small.”
