Chapter 24 - Gabriel

Gabriel and I did not repair five lost years in one dinner.

We had coffee.

Then fought.

Then avoided subject.

Then fought again.

I accused him of abandoning me.

He said:

“You told me to go.”

I said message was forged.

He said he did not know.

Both true.

He apologized for contempt toward Mauricio early in marriage that made it easier for me to dismiss his warnings as jealousy.

I apologized for assuming the worst about him without demanding primary evidence.

We reviewed Dad’s probate records together.

The twenty six thousand transfer.

Receipts.

Home-care invoices.

Everything.

I cried over five years lost to screenshot.

Gabriel said:

“Don’t give Mauricio all credit.”

I looked at him.

“We were proud. He used it.”

Yes.

That distinction mattered.

Mauricio manipulated.

But siblings choose repair.

We did.

Slowly.

Gabriel met me for Christmas.

First in six years.

We cooked badly.

He brought folder as joke.

I almost threw fork.

“What?”

“Receipts for dessert.”

May you like

I laughed until I cried.

That was when I knew he was my brother again.
