Chapter 12 - Mauricio’s Mother Calls Me a Thief

Teresa violated no protective order because it did not initially name her.

She called from new number.

I answered once, on advice to document? Usually better not. Sarah said if she called, do not engage, but I answered before realizing.

“You’re enjoying this.”

Her voice.

I nearly hung up.

“Teresa.”

“You have always wanted Mauricio beneath you.”

“No.”

“You got promotion and suddenly decided he was criminal.”

“The audit started before dinner.”

Silence.

She did not know I knew.

Then:

“Gabriel has poisoned you.”

“He brought evidence.”

“He brought lies.”

“Did you register Lakeview Strategic Services?”

Silence.

“Did you?”

“You have no idea what that company was.”

“Then tell investigators.”

“He was trying to build something of his own.”

“With Westbridge money?”

“You think companies like yours don’t waste millions?”

That sentence.

I went still.

“Goodbye, Teresa.”

“Wait.”

“What?”

“You benefited too.”

“How?”

“Mauricio paid your mortgage.”

“Our mortgage.”

“With money from his business.”

“Joint funds.”

“Where do you think those came from?”

She wanted me afraid.

Maybe she was right some marital spending came from tainted funds.

That did not make me conspirator automatically.

Sarah later confirmed forensic tracing showed approximately $72,000 of fraud proceeds had entered a joint household account over three years and been used for ordinary expenses.

Mortgage.

Utilities.

Vacation.

Did I know source?

No.

Would restitution/forfeiture affect marital property?

Potentially.
