Chapter 14 - The State Case
The ballroom assault case moved faster than federal fraud.
Video showed hair yank and slap.
Witnesses.
Split lip.
My statement.
Mauricio initially pleaded not guilty.
His attorney argued alcohol, mutual argument, no serious injury.
That did not erase battery.
He eventually entered guilty plea to domestic battery and assault-related count under state agreement.
Sentence:
One hundred eighty days jail, much suspended except thirty days served, two years probation, mandatory intervention program, fines, protective order.
But federal pretrial detention later overlapped? To avoid timeline, state sentence executed before federal trial or held. Let's say 30 days served after plea, then probation stayed/adjusted when federal incarceration began.
The state sentence felt small.
I hated it.
Sarah said:
“It addresses slap, not three years fraud.”
I knew.
Still.
The law was not designed to make one public humiliation equal seven years.
That did not mean it was nothing.
