Chapter 11 - The Forged Messages Between Siblings

Gabriel’s firm, no longer formally on case due conflict, turned over material to independent forensics.

Among Mauricio’s devices were backups from our old iPad.

Five years earlier.

There were messages.

My account.

Gabriel’s.

Some real.

Some not.

The message I remembered sending:

Don’t contact me again.

Had been sent from old iPad at 1:14 a.m.

On a night I was asleep after returning from Dallas.

Device location:

Our condo.

Mauricio had been home.

My current phone location showed airport hotel? Wait if I had returned from Dallas, phone at condo too. Hard to prove. Let's set I was still in Dallas. Better: I was traveling. So old iPad at condo, phone in Dallas. Great.

Another email from Gabriel to me had been deleted before synchronization.

Subject:

DAD TRANSFER RECEIPTS.

He attached documentation proving $26,000 reimbursement.

I never saw.

A fake forward shown to me by Mauricio replaced body with:

Valeria is impossible when it comes to money. Let her believe what she wants.

Gabriel never wrote.

Metadata showed local HTML alteration saved as screenshot.

Not advanced hacking.

Manipulation.

My brother and I sat across kitchen in his rented Chicago apartment and reviewed.

I cried.

“So he did this.”

“Yes.”

“You knew?”

“No.”

“You didn’t forge my messages?”

“No.”

“I’m sorry.”

Gabriel looked away.

“I was cruel too.”

“When?”

“When I told you if you chose him, stop asking me to prove myself.”

“You were angry.”

“I knew he was isolating you and still made it easier.”

I shook head.

“You respected what you thought was my boundary.”

“Maybe. Also pride.”

Both.

We did not blame everything on Mauricio.

That was important.

He manipulated a fracture.

May you like

He did not create sibling love from nothing or erase our agency.

We rebuilt slowly.
