Chapter 8 - Margaret’s Rosary
Margaret’s house was spotless.
Police searched only with warrant connected to obstruction and evidence after more findings.
They were looking for communications, not religious objects.
They found a notebook beside her rosary.
Not a secret abuse diary.
A household calendar.
Entries:
Jan 4 Emily rib issue. Tell clinic fall from stool.
Feb 11 Lily school concern. Call teacher.
Mar 3 Emily wrist. Ice, no ER.
April 22 argument. Keep girls upstairs.
May 7 Richard angry about contraception.
June 18 Claire? No, wrong story. We must stay names.
June 18 Emily threatens leave. Remind about finances.
July 2 lawyer? Did Emily ever contact lawyer? Not yet. Let's introduce she had searched divorce attorney but not contacted maybe.
Aug 15 Emily asking bank password.
Sept 1 Watch mail.
Then current:
Oct 6 Emily clinic? Unknown.
Oct 21 hospital.
The entries were not all sinister.
Family scheduling mixed.
Dentist.
Church.
Groceries.
But scattered among ordinary:
Keep girls upstairs.
Tell clinic fall.
Watch mail.
Those phrases showed Margaret’s role.
Then text threads.
Richard:
She says ribs hurt.
Margaret:
No hospital. Questions.
Richard:
She won’t stop whining.
Margaret:
Give ibuprofen.
Another:
School called about Lily drawing.
Margaret:
Handled.
Richard:
What did you say?
Margaret:
Kids make things up when parents argue.
Then:
Emily almost told nurse something.
Richard:
What?
Margaret:
I stayed.
That was chilling.
Then an audio memo? Margaret recorded church prayer maybe. No need.
Then financial.
Margaret had her own motive keeping family together.
Richard paid her mortgage and expenses since widowhood.
If marriage ended, she feared losing.
She told friend in text:
If Emily takes girls and half house, Richard won’t be able help me.
Friend:
That’s not reason she should stay if unhappy.
Margaret:
Marriage is not about happiness.
There.
Not criminal motive but emotional.
Then prosecutors charged Margaret with obstruction/witness tampering? She had coached girls and false statements. Could be:
misdemeanor false report? She lied to police about fall.
attempt to influence witnesses? after arrest instructed girls maybe before.
aiding concealment after assault by coordinating false stairs story.
child endangerment? She left injured woman? Hard.
Let's keep prosecutors charged her with conspiracy to obstruct investigation and one count of witness tampering related instructing Lily to repeat false fall story, plus false statement to officers.
No assault charge because she did not strike.
Her lawyer argued she was frightened of son.
Was she?
Maybe somewhat.
But evidence showed she reinforced.
Then her interview proffer.
“I was afraid Richard would turn on me.”
Had he ever hit her?
“No.”
Threatened?
“No.”
Then fear more of losing relationship.
She admitted:
“I thought keeping marriage intact was best for girls.”
Even while violence.
Then:
“I blamed Emily because she could have been quieter.”

Then:
“Did you see backyard assault?”
“Yes.”
“Did you tell Richard stop?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“I thought Emily had provoked.”
Then after unconscious:
“I said no ambulance because police.”
So protecting son.
Then:
“Did you help invent stairs?”
“Yes.”
Direct.
Plea maybe later.
Then old injuries.
She admitted convincing me not hospital twice.
“No one forced.”
True.
But after husband hurt.
Then:
“Did you know about pregnancy?”
“No.”
“After?”
Richard told.
Then message to Lily.
She admitted.
“I wanted child to understand why father upset.”
Horrifying.
Then prosecutor:
“Why tell six year old mother hid pregnancy?”
Margaret looked down.
“To make her angry at Emily.”
There.
That admission likely sealed family court exclusion.
Then I received summary through prosecutor.
I cried not from betrayal surprise.
From clarity.
Margaret did not merely fail to protect.
She recruited my daughters into emotional punishment.
Then Amy said:
“You don’t have to ever see her.”
I knew.
But daughters might later.
Their choice with safety.
Then school resumed at a confidential temporary campus? Actually same school could expose shelter address but transportation. We kept same with protective plan.
Lily’s teacher apologized.
“I should’ve pushed harder.”
I said:
“You reported once.”
She had.
CPS closed after I lied.
System imperfect, but she did act.
No villain.
Then I met Rosa.
She requested through advocate.
I hesitated.
Agreed.
We met police community room.
She cried.
“I heard.”
“I know.”
“I should’ve called.”
“Yes.”
“I was scared.”
“Of Richard?”
“Yes.”
“He never hit you.”
“No.”
Silence.
She did not defend.
Then:
“I’m sorry.”
I asked:
“Why today?”
“Your little girl screamed. I heard Lily.”
That broke through.
Then:
“And camera.”
She knew evidence.
Then Rosa said:
“My husband used to yell. Never hit. I spent years telling myself other people's marriage is private.”
She learned wrong.
I did not forgive on spot.
But I accepted she came.
Then she said:
“Can I testify?”
“Yes.”
She did.
Then Richard’s criminal case headed toward grand jury.
He had offered plea to simple assault?
Prosecutor refused because pattern and conspiracy evidence.
His lawyer signaled trial.
