Chapter 21 - Rowan and Ellis

We met in a public botanical garden.

Not memorial.

I refused turning pregnancy loss into shared ceremony.

Richard arrived alone.

Carla knew.

I knew.

No secrets.

He sat.

“I’m sorry.”

“You said.”

Then:

“I need ask.”

“Okay.”

“When you learned Y chromosome, what did you feel?”

He closed eyes.

“First?”

“Yes.”

“Joy.”

That hurt.

Then:

“Then horror.”

“Why?”

“Because joy proved I still thought boy mattered.”

He looked.

“I hated myself.”

Then:

“Would you have been happier if one or both boys?”

“At that time, yes.”

Honest.

“And if girls?”

“I would have been disappointed.”

I stared.

Then:

“That’s why I hid.”

“I know.”

Then:

“Do you understand now that the twins’ sex is not tragedy?”

“Yes.”

Then:

“What is?”

He answered:

“That you were afraid to tell husband you were pregnant.”

Good.

Then I asked:

“Do you think you caused loss?”

He swallowed.

“I don’t know.”

“Do you live as if maybe?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because even if medically unrelated, I created home where you couldn't get care when bleeding.”

That was key.

I had delayed clinic because fear.

Even if miscarriage chromosomal, violence altered care.

Then:

“I’m sorry for that.”

I nodded.

Then:

“Do you want forgiveness?”

“I want you free of me. If forgiveness helps, yes. If not, no.”

Growth.

I thought long.

“I forgive you.”

His face changed.

Then:

“I do not excuse.”

“I know.”

“I would still testify the same.”

“I know.”

“I would still leave.”

“I hope.”

That surprised.

Then:

“I’m glad you did.”

I cried.

Not reunion.

Then he asked:

“Can I tell Carla?”

“That I forgave?”

“Yes.”

“Sure.”

Then:

“Can I tell girls?”

“If it comes up.”

No performance.

We left separately.

At home, I felt lighter and annoyed.

Forgiveness had become myth in my head.

It did not transform.

No music.

Just less weight.

Then Lily called.

“Dad said you met.”

“He wasn’t supposed to announce?”

“He said only because I asked where he went.”

Fine.

Then:

“Are you friends now?”

“No.”

She laughed.

“Still?”

“Forever probably.”

Then:

“Good.”

Why?

“Because I don't need weird family reunion.”

She was right.

Then my sister Amy.

She had carried us.

Her marriage? not needed.

She asked:

“Do you ever blame me for not seeing?”

“No.”

“You stopped calling.”

“Richard made it hard. I helped by hiding.”

Then:

“I wish I broke door down.”

“That would have made good movie.”

She laughed.

Then serious:

“You called when I needed.”

Yes.

Then I returned to original women’s clinic.

Not because pregnant.

Annual gynecology.

The same nurse no longer there.

I sat in waiting room.

Fear.

Then a pregnant woman beside me smiled.

Twins? no need.

I breathed.

My medical care was mine.

Then I asked records department for copy of first ultrasound.

They gave.

Two tiny shapes.

I looked.

I had avoided years.

I put in box.

May you like

Not display.

Mine.
