Chapter 20 - What Richard Told His Son

Owen was six when Richard decided to tell him age appropriate.

I did not know until Lily mentioned.

“Dad told Owen he hurt you.”

My stomach tightened.

“How?”

“He said when he was younger he believed men should control families and he hurt my mom, went to prison.”

Good.

Then:

“Owen asked if Dad hurts Carla.”

“He said no.”

Carla confirmed independently if child asks? Good.

Then:

“Owen asked why girls.”

Richard said:

“I was wrong about boys being more important.”

That mattered.

Then Lily said:

“I told Owen if Dad ever says girls bad, tell me.”

I laughed.

“You’re threatening father through six-year-old?”

“Accountability network.”

Teen/young adult humor.

Then Sophie had first boyfriend at sixteen.

He grabbed wrist during argument once.

She came home.

“Mom.”

I saw red mark.

“What happened?”

She told.

“What do you want?”

“Break up.”

“Okay.”

We did not tell her “all boys.”

She ended by text, school counselor informed.

The boy apologized, no further.

Sophie said:

“I knew because Dad.”

I felt grief and pride.

Then:

“Did I overreact?”

“No.”

A grab can be boundary.

No need wait.

Then Lily college.

She studied mechanical engineering.

Richard joked:

“Better at math than me.”

No gender.

He attended.

Then I had my own health.

At fifty, hip pain from old pelvic fracture.

Imaging.

Dr. said mild arthritis.

I laughed.

“My bones keep receipts.”

He looked confused.

I explained nothing.

Physical therapy.

No surgery.

Then Parkland invited? No.

No need.

Then Rosa died? We can close maybe. She had moved. She sent Christmas cards.

One year a card returned.

Her daughter wrote she had passed.

I felt sadness.

Rosa's camera changed everything, but she was not hero.

She was a neighbor who acted late.

I donated to local DV shelter in her name? Maybe too symbolic. No.

I sent condolences.

Then Detective Morales retired.

We got notice? Maybe at a community event. No need.

Then the unicorn notebook.

Lily at twenty two asked to destroy.

“Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Official court copies existed? It may have been evidence copy. Original personal.

We shredded.

Not dramatic.

She kept one page?

No.

“All?”

“All.”

Sophie watched.

“Can I draw new?”

Lily laughed.

She drew family on blank paper:

Mom.

Lily.

Sophie.

Dad.

Carla.

Owen.

Amy.

Not same house.

A line connecting.

No one bigger.

Then I thought story finally became ordinary.

But one thread remained.

The twins.

I had never told Richard the names I used privately until girls did years ago? We said he learned names earlier. He knew.

At fifty two, Richard asked through daughters if I would meet at memorial garden.

No.

Then he asked directly via email? We had limited allowed communication now, children adults, protective order expired.

Emily,

I would like to apologize specifically for what I said about Rowan and Ellis. I won’t contact again if you decline.

I considered.

What could he add?

May you like

Then realized I wanted one question.

I agreed.
