Chapter 7 - Margaret Mercer

Margaret Mercer had never liked women she could not position beneath her.

I saw it clearly only after.

She was sixty one.

Widowed.

Former luxury real estate broker.

Not poor.

Not dependent.

She dressed perfectly.

Spoke softly in restaurants.

Remembered birthdays.

Then delivered insults as advice.

When I bought my condo, she said:

“A woman living alone that high up must get terribly lonely.”

When I was promoted:

“I hope you still have time to build a real life.”

When Julian and I got engaged:

“Men need peace at home. Careers are wonderful until they start competing with a husband.”

I laughed then.

I thought old fashioned.

Julian always said:

“She’s from another generation.”

She was born in 1965, not 1865.

No excuse.

Her marriage to Julian’s father had been traditional.

Robert Mercer owned a regional commercial real estate firm.

Margaret handled household and later became broker.

Robert died five years earlier.

Julian inherited around $900k plus partial partnership interest sold later.

Margaret inherited home and investments.

She had built identity around son.

Texts revealed.

MARGARET:

Your father would be ashamed you need permission from wife.

JULIAN:

I don’t.

MARGARET:

Then prove.

Another:

MARGARET:

Ava’s father raised her like a son.

JULIAN:

What does that even mean?

MARGARET:

No softness. No submission.

Julian occasionally pushed back.

That complicated.

He was not puppet.

Then:

JULIAN:

Mom stop.

MARGARET:

You’ll thank me.

Other messages were all Julian.

JULIAN:

Need her trust info.

JULIAN:

Need condo equity.

JULIAN:

Need salary control.

He used mother.

Mother encouraged.

Mutual.

Then Margaret’s lawyer sought plea early on notary/forgery charges.

State investigators had:

False notarization journal.

Forged POA.

Fraudulent submission.

Messages.

Attempt to use my identity/trust.

Could be felony forgery, identity theft, attempted financial exploitation? I'm adult competent, not elder. Wire fraud if interstate portal? Maybe federal but amount no loss. State sufficient.

Prosecutors charged:

Forgery.

Identity theft/unauthorized use of personal identifying info.

Official misconduct related to notary.

Attempted financial fraud.

Conspiracy with Julian.

No money transferred.

That reduces sentencing.

She surrendered.

No dramatic arrest.

Bond.

No contact.

Her first public statement:

“This is a private marital disagreement exaggerated by a wealthy family.”

My father read.

Smiled once.

“What?”

“She thinks this helps.”

No response.

Then my own role.

I had not yet told extended family.

Aunt Catherine knew trust issue.

Cousins heard.

One cousin texted:

Is Julian actually dangerous?

I answered:

He tried to hit me and participated in forged financial documents. Please do not contact him for me.

No social media war.

Then one of Julian's friends called? I blocked.

The wedding photos remained online.

I took down mine.

Not because ashamed.

Because I did not want face.

Then condo.

I returned with building security after protective order.

The table remained broken.

I had not cleaned fully because police documented.

Cleaning crew came.

I watched them lift shattered porcelain.

Three days of marriage reduced to stains.

I replaced table? Not immediately.

A folding table from Target for months.

It made me laugh.

Julian had kicked a $4,000 oak table.

I ate at $69 folding table and felt safer.

Then I discovered his suitcase in guest closet.

Police-supervised retrieval scheduled.

I did not open.

He took clothes, laptop already seized, personal items.

He left behind wedding tuxedo garment bag.

Building staff shipped through lawyer.

No confrontation.

Then smart home.

Changed lock.

Removed his code.

Security.

No need fortress.

Then training.

My shoulder hurt from pin.

Physical therapist:

“You won.”

I said:

“Self-defense isn’t a match.”

He apologized.

Important.

I returned to jiu jitsu gym after six years away.

Coach Maria saw.

“You look like hell.”

“Marriage.”

She laughed then stopped when I explained.

“You want train?”

“Yes.”

First roll, I froze when partner grabbed wrist unexpectedly.

Not fear of losing.

Memory.

I tapped.

Sat.

Maria:

“You okay?”

“No.”

“Done?”

“No.”

We continued later.

Training was not proof I could never be hurt.

Julian had hurt me without landing punch.

He had used trust.

Love.

May you like

Access.

That was harder to block.
