Chapter 15 - The Family Fortune Was Never Mine

At thirty one, I sat with Elaine Foster and finally read Halcyon trust from beginning to end.

Not summary.

Full.

Two hundred pages.

Granddad had anticipated nearly everything except homicidal spouse? No.

He anticipated:

Divorce.

Creditors.

Addiction.

Bad investments.

Tax.

Beneficiary incapacity.

Trustee misconduct.

He had not written “if granddaughter’s husband tries to forge POA.”

But authentication did.

Then I realized something embarrassing.

I had talked for years about “family trust” as if it were distant.

I benefited materially.

College costs.

Condo distribution.

Annual distributions.

Security.

That privilege made it easier to leave Julian financially.

I could stay with Dad.

Hire Sarah.

Take time from work.

Replace cards.

Not everyone can.

I refused to turn self-defense into simple lesson:

Just leave.

Leaving costs.

Money.

Housing.

Legal access.

Childcare sometimes.

I had advantages.

My story did not prove system easy.

Then “family fortune.”

How much was mine?

None of principal outright.

My actuarial beneficial share maybe millions over life, but not guaranteed.

Trust could outlive.

At death, my descendants/other lines according terms.

Julian had targeted an asset he could never truly own through marriage.

Even a valid POA would not turn him beneficiary.

He risked everything for misunderstanding plus immediate $450k need.

That was tragedy of greed.

Then at protector meeting, Aunt Catherine said:

“Granddad would love this.”

“What?”

“All these controls.”

“He’d be insufferable.”

“Yes.”

We laughed.

Then family office changed policies.

No beneficiary agent addition within 30 days of marriage without independent counsel confirmation.

Could be paternalistic? They consulted beneficiaries.

I approved.

Then my cousins joked spouses now need background checks.

No.

We were careful not to stigmatize marriage.

Trust remained separate.

Then I updated my estate plan.

Medical agent Dad first, Aunt Catherine second.

Financial POA Sarah? Better trusted friend + professional coagent.

I chose Dad and independent fiduciary.

No spouse automatically in future.

But I did not permanently ban future spouse.

Documents could be changed if trust earned.

Then dating.

At thirty two, someone asked me out.

I panicked.

Said no.

At thirty three, another.

Coffee.

I told him early:

“I was married before.”

“How long?”

“Legally fourteen months. Functionally three days.”

He thought joke.

Then I said domestic violence and fraud.

He apologized.

We dated few months, ended normally.

That was important.

No villain.

No trauma romance.

Then at thirty five I met Erin? User probably assumes heterosexual but no need. Let's keep later maybe a man named Luke? But user likes family thriller, not romance. Could remain single by choice. Let's not force.

Ava can be fulfilled single.
