Chapter 13 - The Marriage Ends

Our marriage lasted legally fourteen months.
Emotionally three days.
Illinois dissolution moved through.
Prenup upheld.
Julian withdrew challenge after financial conviction made hidden debts obvious and his own attorney recommended.
Property:
My condo remained mine.
My brokerage.
Retirement.
Halcyon beneficial interest.
His retirement.
His remaining brokerage.
Mercer Peak loss his.
Joint account $42,000:
$20k returned each based contributions.
Remaining wedding gift $2k split according gift records? Could donate? Better split $1k each.
Joint credit card:
We divided charges by benefit. Wedding/honeymoon deposit maybe. Honeymoon canceled after assault, some nonrefundable. Each paid half? Prenup. Fine.
No alimony.
No child support.
No children.
Wedding gifts:
Returned where feasible? Marriage ended immediately. Some people said keep.
We sent joint gifts back or divided according giver.
The mixer from Margaret? I did not want. Returned through lawyer.
My wedding dress sat at Dad’s house.
I eventually donated to charity bridal resale.
No symbolic burning.
Then condo damage.
Julian paid court-ordered restitution for table? $4k, cleaning $1.2k maybe. His insurer not cover intentional. He paid from account.
I replaced table after a year.
Not expensive.
Round walnut.
No sharp corners.
Then civil suit.
Could I sue for assault/financial invasion? Yes, but collect maybe.
Sarah asked:
“What do you want?”
“To be done.”
We filed narrow civil claim for remaining fraud/security/legal expenses not restitution, emotional harm? Settlement offered $110,000 from Julian’s personal assets to release civil tort claims excluding criminal restitution.
I thought.
He still had brokerage ~$300k and retirement protected. A settlement could spare years.
We settled $125,000 after attorneys? Maybe.
No confidentiality on facts? He wanted. I refused broad. Final $115k with mutual no-disparagement limited? Hmm.
I accepted $100,000 plus legal fees? Let's keep simple: civil settlement $125,000, no admission beyond existing convictions, no confidentiality preventing me from discussing my experience, mutual no-contact.
Money did not make attack okay.
I invested.
Used some for therapy/security/table.
Then salary.
My employer cleared anonymous complaint.
Promoted me a year later? Could be due merit. I did not become executive due trauma. I became director of infrastructure analytics at 31. Normal.
Then Halcyon.
At age thirty, I became eligible trust protector.
I delayed acceptance six months because title made me anxious.
Aunt Catherine:
“Julian doesn’t own role.”
I accepted after independent counsel training.
What did I do?
Mostly sign annual governance acknowledgment.
No power trip.
The role let me remove corporate trustee only for cause.
I never did.
Boring.
Then Dad.
He stopped asking every day if doors locked.
Good.
Our relationship strengthened but I noticed his own control.
After attack he wanted me stop dating forever.
At least joked too much.
I said:
“Dad.”
He apologized.
He had fear too.
Then grief.
I had loved Julian.
Did the financial scheme mean every tender moment fake?
No.
Messages to friends showed genuine love.
He bragged about me.
He planned vacations unrelated.
He bought my favorite tea.
Humans can love and exploit.
That was harder than villain mask.
Therapist:
“You don’t need decide whether love was real to decide behavior was unsafe.”
I wrote.
Then Julian’s letters from prison began.
I declined first three.
Fourth, Sarah said:
May you like
“He says it is accountability statement. No request.”
I read.
