Chapter 14 - Julian’s Letter

Ava,
I have spent fourteen months trying to turn what I did into something my mother caused, something debt caused, something pressure caused, something your father caused.
None of those people moved my hand.
That was first line.
I kept reading.
I did love you.
I also resented that you did not need me.
That sentence hurt.
I wanted to be the person who handled things. When you had your own condo, career, money, father, trust, friends, I felt like I was entering a life where there was no empty space shaped like me.
Then:
Instead of building a place beside you, I decided I had to take control of what already existed.
Then money.
Mercer Peak.
The debt.
He wrote:
I convinced myself if we merged finances, my problem became ours. I convinced myself that was normal marriage.
Then mother.
Mom did not invent this. She encouraged parts of me I already wanted permission to use.
Then physical attack:
When you said no repeatedly, I felt humiliated. I wanted you afraid. I raised my hand because I wanted to prove I could end the argument physically.
Then:
You stopped me.
I hated you for being able to.
That was honest.
Then chair leg.
I picked it up because I wanted control back, not because I was defending myself.
There.
Then trust:
I took pictures of your safe documents months before wedding.
I knew it was wrong.
I told myself spouses do not have secrets.
Then:
I forged nothing myself with pen, but I sent Mom the documents and told her to submit if you refused. That makes it mine too.
Yes.
Then job complaint.
I scheduled email because I thought if you lost work temporarily, you would depend on me.
Then:
That is the part I am most ashamed of, because I knew your job mattered to you for reasons beyond money.
At bottom:
I will not write again unless you ask.
I am sorry.
I read twice.
Did I forgive?
No.
Did letter help?
Yes.
Truth does not require reconciliation.
I wrote no response.
He kept promise.
No more letters.
Then Margaret’s.
I eventually read.
Also no reply.
Then release dates.
Margaret first.
She moved to Wisconsin near sister after custody.
Sold Hinsdale home.
Not poverty.
She had legal fees, fines, restitution.
Still comfortable.
No contact.
Julian remained.
Then Mercer Peak.
Ethan and Mason completed software investment with replacement partner.
It did well.
Julian had no share because defaulted.
No court gave back.
He lost business opportunity.
Not criminal punishment.
Contract.
Then his former employer fired after convictions.
Professional licenses? He had CFA? If investment professional, maybe regulatory sanctions. Let's say CFA charter suspended? CFA Institute disciplinary maybe. Better not name. FINRA if licensed could bar after fraud conviction. He worked private corporate development, not securities registered. But felony fraud made future finance hard.
He served.
Then I trained.
Returned judo tournament? No need.
I coached women’s beginner self-defense once weekly at gym, not public advocate. Could be ordinary.
But user dislikes advocate transformation. Keep hobby.
May you like
I trained because I liked.
No foundation.
