Chapter 20 - The Thing I Never Told Julian

There had been one more secret.
Not family trust.
My training.
Julian truly did not know.
Why?
I had not hidden intentionally.
Early dates, he asked hobbies.
I said:
“Gym.”
At twenty four I had stopped competing.
Old medals in Dad’s basement.
No social media.
My shoulder scar he thought skiing injury; I had not corrected because conversation moved.
Maybe part of me enjoyed being perceived soft.
People reveal themselves around those they underestimate.
But I never expected husband.
After video went public, everyone knew.
Articles called:
Finance Analyst With Martial Arts Past Takes Down Husband.
Magnificent, dangerous secret.
I hated.
Training did not make me dangerous.
Choices do.
Coach Maria said:
“Technique gave options.”
Exactly.
If I had no training, Julian’s assault would still be wrong.
If he had landed, not my fault.
I did not want story teaching women they need fight better.
The goal is not winning violence.
It is not being subjected.
Then I returned to coaching beginners occasionally.
I never said:
You can always defend yourself.
I said:
Distance.
Exit.
Voice.
Call help.
Physical skills if needed.
No guarantees.
That felt responsible.
Then one student recognized.
“You’re her.”
I sighed.
“Yes.”
“Show move.”
“No.”
May you like
She laughed.
Normal.
