Chapter 8 - Emma’s Twenty Four Days

Emma spent twenty four days in NICU.

Not six months.

Not two days.

Twenty four.

I learned hospital life by numbers.

Four pounds two ounces.

Then four pounds one.

Then four pounds three.

Oxygen levels.

Feeding milliliters.

Temperature.

Jaundice.

Respiratory rate.

The first week she needed support.

The second she learned to feed.

The third she learned what premature babies learn slowly:

To remain warm.

To breathe and swallow together.

To gain weight without exhausting herself.

My recovery was slower in different ways.

Burn graft on shoulder.

Daily dressings.

Physical therapy.

Cesarean pain.

Nightmares.

A hand approaching too fast could make me recoil.

Men’s voices in hall sometimes sent me back to kitchen.

Hospital psychologist told me:

“Your body is reacting to threat memory.”

I said:

“I know he isn’t here.”

“Your nervous system does not process facts as quickly as your mind.”

I hated that.

Then accepted it.

Emma did better.

Screening showed no major intracranial bleeding.

No severe chronic lung disease.

Doctors explained prematurity could still affect development.

We would monitor.

No promises.

That was enough.

Three weeks after birth, Julian found a way into rehabilitation corridor.

He claimed he needed to serve divorce petition.

A process server could have.

He wanted me to see him.

He entered while Emma was against my chest during skin to skin time.

My whole body froze.

He placed folder on my lap.

“Sign.”

Again.

Always sign.

“What is this?”

“Divorce.”

He leaned closer.

“You lost house, Claire.”

I stared.

“What?”

“You can’t afford it alone. Court will recognize marital interest.”

Then:

“And you’re not taking my daughter from me.”

I held Emma tighter.

Sarah entered.

“Step away from my client.”

Julian turned.

He recognized her name.

“You’re still involved?”

“Very.”

Detective Brooks entered behind Sarah with hospital security.

Julian’s face hardened.

Sarah removed papers from my lap.

“Claire will not be signing anything today.”

Julian sneered.

“You think because Thomas left her house, she wins everything?”

“No.”

Sarah’s tone stayed calm.

“I think title is solely hers. Your company debt is yours. And you are currently under investigation for assault, coercion, and attempted financial fraud.”

Julian looked toward Brooks.

Brooks held sealed evidence drive.

“What is that?”

“Forensic copy of cloud recording from kitchen.”

Julian went white.

His eyes found mine.

“Claire.”

I did not answer.

For first time since assault, I understood something simple.

The truth no longer depended on my ability to persuade him.
