Chapter 14 - Evelyn Turns on Julian
Evelyn did not suddenly become remorseful.
She became afraid.
Her attorney showed her sentencing exposure.
Video showed her moving pot.
Taking phone.
Wiping evidence.
Telling me I brought it on myself.
Messages showed pressure.
She faced prison.
She chose herself.
Prosecutors offered plea if she provided truthful testimony and full device/account access.
Evelyn agreed.
Not immunity.
Plea.
She admitted:
She pressured Julian to obtain deed.
She invested money in business.
She told him not to let me leave until I “understood.”
She moved pot to front burner because she wanted me to see active stove while argument happened.
That answer sounded awful but not necessarily plan to burn.
Then came a new audio file.
Evelyn had secretly recorded one argument with Julian two days before assault.
Why?
Because she wanted proof he promised to repay her.
In recording:
EVELYN:
You keep saying Claire will sign.
JULIAN:
She will.
EVELYN:
And if she doesn’t?
JULIAN:
I’ll scare her so badly she won’t say no again.
EVELYN:
Don’t be stupid.
JULIAN:
I’m not losing everything because she worships dead daddy’s house.
That recording strengthened intent to frighten through violence.
Still not explicit intent to kill.
Evelyn testified later that Julian never told her he planned to shove me into pot.
She claimed she expected yelling, blocking doorway, maybe breaking object.
Did I believe her?
Partly.
Her actions after assault still made her responsible for plenty.
Prosecutors accepted plea to conspiracy/coercion, evidence tampering, and complicity in aggravated assault.
She would testify truthfully.
Sentencing deferred until Julian trial.
Julian called her betrayal.
She called it survival.
