Chapter 5 - The Camera Above the Ceiling

Police did not simply download a video and call it truth.
Detective Brooks explained chain of custody because he knew defense would attack everything.
The security provider preserved server records.
Original timestamps.
Device identifiers.
Hash verification.
Access logs.
The hidden camera was inside a smoke detector housing in kitchen ceiling.
Wide angle.
It covered stove, table, back door, most of pantry.
No bathrooms.
No bedrooms.
Installed for security.
The recording from that day began at 1:07 p.m.
I was upstairs.
Julian and Evelyn were alone.
Evelyn moved pot.
Rear burner to front.
Julian asked:
“Why?”
“So she sees it.”
That sentence bothered everyone.
What did it mean?
Maybe she wanted me to see lunch.
Maybe threat.
Prosecutors later argued it mattered only with what followed.
Then:
JULIAN:
She said no again.
EVELYN:
Then stop asking like a child.
JULIAN:
What do you want me to do?
EVELYN:
Make her understand what happens if she keeps choosing that house over her husband.
JULIAN:
She’ll sign.
EVELYN:
And if she doesn’t?
JULIAN:
Then she doesn’t leave this kitchen with the house.
EVELYN:
Good.
At 1:49 I entered.
The argument lasted twelve minutes.
Julian placed quitclaim deed.
I refused.
He stood between me and doorway.
“Not until you sign.”
I tried going around.
He grabbed wrist.
I pulled away.
“Let go.”
He grabbed upper arm.
Then shoved.
Both hands.
The camera captured force.
My body struck stove.
Pot tipped.
I fell.
Then twenty seven seconds passed before anyone called for help.
Twenty seven seconds is not long in a clock.
It is an eternity when someone is screaming.
EVELYN:
Maybe now she’ll stop.
JULIAN:
Shit.
ME:
My baby.
Julian looked toward visible pantry camera.
Destroyed.
Evelyn took my phone.
Wiped pot.
Julian dialed.
“She slipped. She slipped.”
Then operator.
The footage did not prove every legal question.
Did Julian intend to kill me?
Did Evelyn know he would shove?
Did moving pot mean planning bodily harm?
Those questions remained.
But it destroyed one defense.
May you like
Accident.
I had not slipped.
