Chapter 12 - Coming Home Without Him

Emma came home after twenty four days.

I came home three days later from rehabilitation.

Not to same kitchen.

Sarah arranged cleaners after police released scene.

I could not enter initially.

The smell of soup remained in memory even after tile replacement.

So I stayed in small furnished rental for six weeks.

Emma slept in bassinet beside me.

Home health nurse visited.

Burn therapist.

Physical therapist.

My friend Jenna came grocery shopping.

No grand rescue.

Ordinary people.

Ordinary help.

At three in morning, Emma cried.

I fed her.

At four, I cried.

She slept.

At six, we both slept on sofa.

I learned motherhood without Julian.

Not because I wanted single motherhood.

Because safety required it.

I returned to house after kitchen renovation began.

I asked contractors to remove front burner area entirely.

New stove.

New counters.

Different layout.

Sarah asked:

“Are you sure you want keep house?”

“Yes.”

Not because stubborn.

Because I refused to let Julian convert violence into eviction.

Dad gave me one safe asset.

I would not abandon it because Julian poisoned one room.
