Chapter 5 - Melissa Wasn’t Alone

The fake email came from Melissa.
She admitted quickly.
Why continue after Ryan’s arrest?
Because she panicked.
Ryan had texted her before arrest:
If anything blows up, reassure Meridian that Emily still wants the deal.
He sent before police entered?
Timestamp 9:17 a.m.
The same morning.
Minutes before he came home.
He knew I was packing.
He had seen security alert and returned.
But before confronting me, he messaged Melissa to protect loan.
Priorities.
Then Melissa’s attorney realized cooperation was only path.
She gave investigators access to emails.
Ryan had recruited her months earlier.
At first small things.
Pick up documents.
Drop forms.
Use real-estate experience.
Then:
“Emily doesn’t like signing boring paperwork.”
Melissa laughed.
Later:
“Can you imitate her initials?”
She said no.
Then he offered debt forgiveness.
She eventually agreed to remote notary impersonation.
No physical abuse conspiracy.
No knowledge of bathroom assaults.
When she learned?
Ryan told her:
“Emily is losing it.”
Melissa believed.
Then saw my recordings in media? not public. Police interview told limited.
She cried.
“I thought she was unstable.”
Detective:
“Why?”
“Ryan said.”
There.
Then Melissa admitted the fake email after arrest.
Charges.
Identity fraud/falsification.
Attempted financial fraud participation.
No prior.
Cooperation.
She would later plead.
Then Ryan’s mother Carol.
Did she know?
Financially, maybe.
She had invested $60,000 in Hart Urban.
She wanted project to succeed.
But no evidence she knew signatures forged.
She repeated Ryan’s version about my instability because he told her.
Not charged.
Important.
Not every relative villain.
Carol later apologized for voicemail.
Not yet.
Then Meridian Capital.
The lender stopped everything.
No funds.
No lien.
My building title clean.
They commissioned internal review because remote notary process failed.
The fake management agreement was flagged.
Good.
Then Hart Urban project collapsed.
Option deadline passed.
Ryan lost approximately $190,000 invested.
Other investors lost some deposits subject contract.
They considered civil claims.
No project.
Ryan blamed me through attorney? His attorney wisely did not.
But one investor called Natalie:
“If Emily had just signed, this wouldn’t happen.”
Natalie hung up.
The development was not my obligation.
Then my job.
I had been on leave.
Employer HR called.
“We can extend maternity leave planning. What do you need?”
I almost cried.
Normal support felt strange.
Then medical.
Dr. Shah asked:
“Do you want Ryan removed from all appointment access?”
“Yes.”
Done.
Emergency contact Natalie.
Hospital security flag.
Birth plan.
No Ryan unless court permitted and I chose.
But as legal father after birth, he might seek rights later.
Not delivery room.
Patient controls visitors.
Good.
Then Ryan’s attorney filed motion to allow him at birth?
Could try but likely no right to delivery room due patient's medical privacy. Court denied or said no authority to force. We can mention.
Judge:
“Childbirth is Mrs. Hart’s medical event. This court will not order hospital access over patient objection.”
Good.
Then Ryan’s bond.
He posted eventually.
His father? deceased maybe. Carol helped.
Release conditions.
No home.
GPS? maybe not necessary.
No contact.
He moved into an extended-stay apartment.
That terrified me.
“He’s out.”
Laura:
“Yes.”
“He knows Natalie’s address.”
Protective order included stay-away.
Safety plan.
Locks.
Cameras.
Work schedule.
No promise order stops him.
Then he obeyed.
At first.
Then a flower delivery.
No card.
Could be him.
Delivery company said ordered by Carol.
Carol said:
“I wanted peace.”
Laura told her:
“No indirect messages.”
She apologized.
No violation maybe.
Then Ryan started attending mandatory pretrial monitoring.
No contact.
His restraint outside made court system see two versions:
public control.
Private control.
Exactly.
Then one evening Natalie asked:
“Why did you marry him?”
I flinched.
She immediately corrected.
“Wrong question.”
I appreciated.
I answered anyway.
“Because he was funny.”
Then:
“Because when Mom died, he made dinner every night for three weeks.”
Because he was good sometimes.
That mattered.
Abusers are not violent every minute.
Otherwise leaving would be simpler.
Then:
“When did he change?”
I thought.
“Maybe he didn’t suddenly.”
He had always hated losing control.
Pregnancy increased stakes.
Money increased stress.
My no became more frequent.
Then he escalated.
No single transformation.
Then Detective Ortiz called.
“We recovered another file from Ryan’s laptop.”
Title:
AFTER BABY.
I closed my eyes.
“What’s in it?”
A draft timeline.
Hospital.
Custody.
Bryden refinance.
Divorce.
Not “murder.”
Not disappearance.
Something more plausible and disturbing.
Day 1:
Document Emily instability.
Day 2:
Bring baby home if doctors allow.
Day 3:
File emergency custody if Emily refuses.
Week 1:
Activate property management agreement.
Week 2:
Close Bryden refinance.
He expected to use my postpartum exhaustion as the moment he could win every dispute at once.
Then at bottom:
Once she calms down, we can fix marriage.
He believed there would still be a marriage after.
That was the part I could not understand.
May you like
He did not think he was destroying us.
He thought he was forcing us through a crisis until I became compliant again.
