Chapter 22 - The Pregnancy I Refused to Control

Lucy was thirty when pregnant.
She called:
“Mom, don’t become weird.”
Too late.
I wanted:
Blood pressure.
Appointments.
Foods.
Safety.
Then I heard myself.
Control can wear concern.
I asked:
“What do you want from me?”
“Be Mom.”
Not nurse.
Not survivor.
Mom.
So I did.
When she complained of nausea:
“That sucks.”
Not checklist.
When she chose birthing center? Maybe hospital. I didn't interfere.
When she invited me and Evan only? She asked me maybe.
“Mom, I want you in delivery room.”
I cried.
Then:
“But if I change my mind…”
“You change it.”
She smiled.
Then Ryan asked Lucy:
“Can I be at hospital waiting room?”
She said:
“No.”
He said:
“Okay.”
I heard through Lucy.
That one word again.
He did not say:
I’m grandfather.
My blood.
My right.
He stayed home.
Sent:
Call when ready.
Then labor.
Healthy.
Lucy delivered son, Benjamin.
I held her hand.
At one point she yelled:
“Don’t touch me!”
I released immediately.
She meant during contraction.
No hurt.
After:
“Sorry.”
“You don’t need.”
Then Benjamin born.
Healthy.
Evan cried.
Lucy cried.
I cried.
Then she said:
“Call Dad.”
Ryan video-called later.
He saw grandson.
“Beautiful.”
No ownership.
Then:
“Can I visit tomorrow?”
Lucy:
“Day after.”
“Okay.”
Then I almost laughed from relief.
A grandfather hearing no.
Ordinary.
Then he visited.
Held Benjamin after asking.
Returned when asked.
Not redemption theater.
Just behavior.
Then Lucy looked at me later.
“Do you think people really change?”
“Some do.”
“How know?”
“You watch for a long time.”
Not promises.
Time.
Then she said:
“Dad changed.”
“Yes.”
“But what he did still happened.”
“Yes.”
Both.
Then:
“Are you glad he’s my dad?”
Hard.
“I’m glad you’re you.”
May you like
No cosmic bargain.
Good.
