Chapter 19 - Lucy Hears the Whole Recording
At twenty four Lucy asked:
“Do recordings still exist?”
“Officially archived, yes.”
“Can I hear?”
I did not have personal file.
Through legal process, maybe victims can retain copy. I had deleted but attorney archive maybe. Laura still had secure record.
Why did she want?
“Dad told me his version.”
Not minimizing.
He said hearing himself changed him.
Lucy wanted context.
I did not want.
She said:
“Mom, I’m an adult.”
True.
We discussed with therapist.
Laura retrieved one selected copy from retained case file.
We listened together.
Not all twenty seven.
Morning.
Ryan:
No one is going to believe a pathetic liar like you.
Then me.
Then struggle.
Then:
Cloud Transfer Complete.
Then pounding.
Lucy stopped.
“That’s enough.”
She cried.
“I hate him.”
“You’re allowed.”
Then:
“But I love him.”
“You’re allowed.”
Then:
“How did you forgive?”
“I stopped needing one feeling.”
She looked.
“What does that mean?”
“I can remember what he did and still see what he became.”
Then:
“Do you trust him?”
“With some things.”
“Would you let him manage your money?”
We laughed.
“No.”
“Would you be alone?”
“Yes now.”
“Would you marry him again?”
“No.”
Immediate.
She laughed through tears.
Then she called Ryan later.
I did not listen.
She told me summary.
“Did you know she was recording?”
“No.”
“Why say nobody would believe?”
“Because I wanted her to feel trapped.”
Then:
“Did you really think she was unstable?”
“No.”
Again.
“Did you love her?”
“Yes.”
“Then what was love to you?”
Ryan cried.
“Possession with good intentions.”
That line.
Lucy said:
“That’s not love.”
He replied:
“I know now.”
Then:
“Do you want me to forgive?”
“I want you to be free to feel what you feel.”
Good.
Then Lucy told him:
“I forgive you.”
She did not increase visits.
Forgiveness not schedule.
Then she asked me:
“Is that okay?”

“It’s yours.”
Good.
