Chapter 11 - Sentencing Ryan

The judge had two categories.
Violence.
Fraud.
Not one giant revenge sentence.
Domestic court imposed three years aggregate with some counts concurrent.
Federal financial court later imposed four years, with part concurrent and part consecutive under coordination, resulting in effective total about five and a half years incarceration, followed by supervised release and restitution/financial restrictions.
Serious.
Not life.
No catastrophic injury.
No funded $680k loss.
But repeated coercion, pregnant victim, planning, forgery.
Then my statement.
I wrote it because speaking felt impossible.
“Ryan spent months telling me nobody would believe me.”
Then:
“The worst consequence was not that I doubted other people.”
“It was that I began doubting myself.”
Then Bryden.
“He treated my grandmother’s property as a resource he could reach once I became tired enough.”
Then Lucy.
“He planned her birth like a deadline.”
Then:
“I do not ask the court to punish him for every unhappy moment in our marriage. I ask the court to sentence the conduct proven here.”
Good.
Then Carol spoke for Ryan.
Not minimizing.
“My son did terrible things.”
Then:
“He was also a loving child and can become a better man.”
Both.
She asked mercy.
Allowed.
Then Trevor.
No statement.
Melissa.
No.
Then Ryan.
He looked at me.
Did not directly address due no contact? In court can speak generally.
“I told myself Emily was unstable because if she was unstable, I didn’t have to accept that she was afraid of me.”
Silence.
“I recorded her worst moments after provoking them.”
Then:
“I forged her signature because I thought eventually the project would work and she would understand.”
Then:
“I used pregnancy as pressure.”
He cried.
“I am sorry.”
Then one sentence:
“I did not think of myself as abusive.”
He looked at judge.
“I thought abusive men hated their wives.”
Then:
“I loved mine.”
That was painful.
“But I wanted obedience more than I respected her.”
There.
Judge sentenced.
No applause.
Ryan was led away.
I held Lucy.
She chewed on plastic teether.
Then divorce finalized.
Bryden remained mine subject a $24,000 agreed reimbursement/credit reflecting proven marital contributions after rents and expenses were analyzed, not Ryan’s full claimed amount.
Joint house sold.
Hart Urban dissolved.
Ryan’s investment lost.
Joint savings divided with adjustment for his unauthorized project transfer.
Retirement division.
No spousal support.
I kept Bryden.
Ryan kept residual claims from Hart Urban worth almost nothing.
No one left penniless by magic.
Then legal custody.
I received sole legal and primary physical custody while Ryan incarcerated.
Any future contact would require court review.
Prison letters screened.
No immediate visits.
Ryan’s parental rights not terminated.
That was uncomfortable but real.
Then surname.
Lucy remained Hart for now.
I returned to maiden name:
Emily Brooks.
Wait Grandma Ruth maybe Brooks. Let's use Emily Brooks as maiden. But user said Emily only. Fine.
Would I change Lucy to Brooks later? Her choice/court.
Then moved.
Not far.
A townhouse near Natalie.
No one else had key.
I sold none of Bryden.
Professional manager.
Then first night after sentencing I could not sleep.
I kept waiting for bathroom footsteps.
None.
At 2 a.m., I turned on fan.
The same rattling sound in my new bathroom.
I panicked.
Then laughed.
Different fan.
Different house.
I turned it off.
Silence.
May you like
At first silence had been dangerous.
Now it belonged to me.
