Chapter 20 - Melissa Comes Back

Melissa contacted me after fifteen years.

Not directly at first.

Through Laura.

She had remarried.

Worked in property administration.

Had completed all legal consequences.

She wanted no money.

No relationship.

Just to return something.

My maternity coat.

The one she wore during remote notary.

Police had returned property to her? Wait it was my coat, how did she have? Ryan gave her. During search maybe evidence then return should go to me. Better perhaps she had a photograph? Hmm.

Let's change: she had my old college bracelet Ryan used with my ID to help impersonation? Could be. But same issue. Maybe she found an envelope among Carol's things after death containing my original signed insurance form Ryan copied. She wanted return.

Good.

She mailed through attorney.

Original homeowners insurance signature page.

Ryan had scanned my signature from it.

Why Carol had?

Ryan left documents with her before prison.

Carol never noticed.

Melissa found clearing estate.

I stared.

The original signature.

My handwriting.

Perfectly normal.

Used as source for forgery.

I could keep.

I shredded after confirming no legal need.

Then Melissa wrote:

I used to think the crime was pretending to be you on camera.

Then:

The deeper thing was believing your no was less important than Ryan’s need.

Good insight.

I responded:

Thank you for returning document.

Nothing more.

Then Lucy asked why no relationship.

“Because forgiveness does not require closeness.”

She nodded.

Then Daniel asked:

“Do you still think about Ryan every day?”

“No.”

That surprised.

Sometimes weeks.

Then case anniversary came without noticing.

That was healing.

Then old house sold again.

Zillow? No need.

I drove neighborhood by accident.

Bathroom window.

I felt nothing at first.

Then sadness.

For woman who lived there.

Not weakness.

Compassion.

I whispered:

“You got out.”

May you like

Then drove.

No grand ritual.
