Chapter 13 - Lucy’s Question

Lucy was six when she found a wedding photograph.

Me in ivory.

Ryan smiling.

“Mommy, is that Daddy?”

“Yes.”

“You married him?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Because I loved him.

She looked confused.

“But he hurt you.”

“Yes.”

“So you loved a bad person?”

I sat.

“People are more complicated than good or bad.”

Then:

“Daddy did bad things.”

“Was he nice too?”

“Yes.”

That felt dangerous to say.

But true.

“He made pancakes.”

“He loved hiking.”

“He read to you before you were born.”

Then:

“And he hurt me.”

Both.

Lucy thought.

“Is he still bad?”

“I don’t know what he is now.”

Good.

Then:

“Can I see him?”

My body froze.

Ryan was still incarcerated but approaching reentry eligibility within a year.

I did not say no forever.

“We can talk with your therapist.”

She nodded.

Then:

“Can I write?”

We arranged.

Her first letter:

Hi Dad. I like purple. Grandma says you like blue. Why did you hurt Mom?

Straight.

Ryan answered:

Because I was controlling and angry, and I made choices I should never have made. Your mom did not cause it. You did not cause it.

Good.

Then:

“I’m sorry.”

Lucy asked:

“Does sorry fix it?”

“No.”

“What does?”

“Sometimes nothing fixes. People can still change what they do next.”

Then she drew him picture.

No forced closeness.

Then Ryan released after serving about four and a half years? Aggregate 5.5 with credits and reentry. Let's say after roughly four years nine months plus lawful credits he transitioned to supervised release. Lucy six.

Conditions:

No contact with me except parenting app/legal.

No unsupervised Lucy visits until family court review.

No financial fiduciary roles involving others during supervision.

No access to Bryden.

No weapons.

He moved to Cincinnati.

Worked warehouse operations coordinator.

Not project management initially.

Then he petitioned for supervised visitation.

Evaluator reviewed.

I opposed unsupervised.

Not supervised.

That surprised everyone, including me.

Why?

Lucy wanted to know him.

Safety structure existed.

First visit.

Professional center.

Ryan entered.

Lucy hid behind therapist.

He stopped.

“Hi.”

She whispered:

“Hi.”

Then:

“Do I have to hug you?”

“No.”

Immediate.

Good.

They played blocks.

He did not ask about me.

At end:

“Can I see you again?”

Lucy looked at therapist.

Then:

“Maybe.”

Ryan nodded.

“Okay.”

That okay mattered.

Second visit she brought drawing.

Third she hugged.

I cried after reading report.

Not because wanted reunion.

Because the man who once refused my no was accepting hers.

Could be real change.

Could be because supervision.

Time would tell.

Then Carol became regular grandmother under my conditions.

She never carried messages.

Good.

Then Melissa.

She had completed sentence/supervision.

She sent apology.

“I impersonated you because I owed Ryan money.”

Then:

“I knew the moment I put your coat on that I was doing something wrong.”

No excuse.

I replied:

I accept the apology. I do not want a relationship.

She said:

Understood.

No drama.

Then one day Lucy said:

“Aunt Melissa sent birthday card?”

“No.”

Why?

Because relationship boundary.

Lucy did not need every relative.

Then Bryden tenants.

Mrs. Alvarez died at eighty.

Her daughter invited me funeral.

I went.

Building had life outside my trauma.

That helped.

Then a developer offered $1.6m.

Sell?

I considered.

Not because Ryan.

Because maintenance.

I chose no.

Not yet.

May you like

For the first time the decision did not feel like proving ownership.

Just investment choice.
