Chapter 14 - Ryan Says No

The biggest sign Ryan changed had nothing to do with me.
His supervisor at work offered promotion.
More money.
Role involved signing vendor credit applications and handling financial authority.
Supervision conditions required disclosure and possible approval.
Ryan declined.
Why?
He wrote Lucy later:
“I’m not ready to be responsible for other people’s money.”
That surprised me.
Then his therapist/evaluator recommended expanded supervised community visits after two years without issues.
Lucy eight.
She wanted.
I agreed to public outings with professional supervisor.
Zoo.
Library.
Science museum.
No home.
Ryan returned on time.
No boundary pushing.
Then he requested photos?
Allowed through app.
No posting online without my consent.
He accepted.
Then one day Lucy told him:
“I don’t like when you call me baby girl.”
Ryan:
“Okay.”
She smiled.
Tiny.
Then she told me:
“Dad listens.”
I answered:
“Good.”
No warning speech.
Then my own relationships.
I had dated twice.
Both brief.
One man, Aaron, became irritated that I would not give him a key after four months.
Old Emily might apologize.
I said:
“No.”
He called me guarded.
I said:
“Yes.”
Relationship ended.
I survived.
Then I met Michael Torres? User requested white American characters originally; story characters are white. We should keep new partner white American if any. Let's choose Nathan Cole. But could avoid partner until later. Maybe Emily remains single for years. Fine.
Then Natalie asked:
“Do you want marriage again?”
“Maybe.”
No rush.
Then property.
I refinanced Bryden myself at lower rate for renovation.
The closing made me shake.
Notary asked ID.
Watched signature.
I read every page.
The loan was $220,000, conservative.
Used to replace roof, plumbing, windows.
No Hart Urban.
I laughed when banker asked:
“Anyone else authorized?”
“No.”
Then:
“Spouse?”
“Divorced.”
Good.
I signed.
The building improved.
Value increased.
No symbolism needed.
Then Ryan paid restitution.
Not to me for full $680k because no loan loss.
Direct costs.
Legal/cyber etc where ordered.
Also divorce settlement obligations.
Small monthly.
He never complained through app.
Then Carol told me privately:
“Ryan says prison saved him.”
I frowned.
“I hate that phrase.”
“So do I.”
Good.
“It didn’t save you.”
“No.”
“He says it forced him to stop explaining.”
Better.
Then I asked:
“Does he blame me?”
“No.”
“How know?”
“He stopped letting me.”
Interesting.
Carol used to say:
“Emily destroyed our family.”
Ryan told her:
“No. I did.”
That mattered.
Then Lucy nine asked if she could spend one supervised afternoon without professional, with Carol present.
Family court evaluator eventually recommended step-down.
I was terrified.
Laura/therapist said:
“Safety plan, public, short.”
I agreed.
Ryan and Carol took Lucy to aquarium.
Three hours.
Returned early.
No problems.
Then visits remained structured.
No overnight.
No access to my home.
No reason.
Then Lucy came back with a question.
“Dad said Grandma’s building is yours.”
“Yes.”
“He said he tried to take money from it.”
“Use it as collateral.”
“Why?”
“For a business project.”
“Did you say no?”
“Yes.”
Lucy frowned.
“Then why didn’t he stop?”
I looked.
“That was the problem.”
She nodded.
Then:
“He said that too.”
I felt something move.
May you like
Not forgiveness.
Respect for truth.
