Chapter 9 - Javier’s First Interview

Javier eventually spoke through counsel.
He admitted:
He knew his mother wanted the condo.
He knew about Monday default.
He booked the suite.
He knew Carmen planned a “family pressure conversation.”
He denied knowing physical assault was planned.
Then investigators showed his message:
KEEP HER FACE CLEAN.
Javier closed his eyes.
“What did you mean?”
“My mom can get physical.”
“How physical?”
“She slaps.”
“Has she hit people before?”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
“Me.”
There.
Carmen had hit Javier throughout childhood.
Not severe injuries documented.
Slaps.
Objects.
Humiliation.
Family called it discipline.
Did that reduce responsibility?
No.
It explained normalization.
Then:
“Why let her near Sofia?”
Javier whispered:
“I thought Sofia would sign before it got that far.”
There.
He expected fear to work.
Then:
“Did you hear Sofia screaming?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you enter?”
“I froze.”
Detective Ellison:
“You spoke through the door.”
“Yes.”
“You told your mother not to hit Sofia’s face.”
Javier started crying.
“I was trying to stop her.”
“No. You were trying to hide it.”
Silence.
Then:
“Did you tell Sofia to go back inside when she escaped?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I panicked.”
“What did you want her to do?”
“Sign and end it.”
There.
Then the sedative.
Did he know?
“No.”
Messages supported maybe.
Carmen and Jessica discussed medication separately.
Javier not in chat.
Then the guarantee.
He knew.
He had sent the draft to Carmen.
Why?
“If she transferred the condo, the bank might extend us.”
“Us?”
“My family.”
“You were not an owner.”
He expected future share.
Carmen promised him twenty percent of Robles Family Holdings after refinance.
There.
He had personal financial motive too.
Then love.
Detective asked:
“Did you marry Sofia for her money?”
“No.”
“Would you have married her without the condo?”
“Yes.”
“Would you have let her walk away from your family’s debt?”
Javier did not answer.
Then:
“Did you love her?”
“Yes.”
The investigator said:
“Then explain why she was bleeding behind a door you chose not to open.”
Javier had no answer.
Then Sofia heard only a summary.
She did not need to watch.
Her reaction:
“I wish he’d say he never loved me.”
I understood.
Because if he never loved her, the betrayal could be classified as fraud.
If he did, then love had existed beside cowardice.
Harder.
Then she said:
“I want a divorce.”
No hesitation.
The marriage was eleven hours old when she escaped.
The annulment issue arose.
Could marriage be annulled for fraud?
Maybe.
Her attorney advised divorce was cleaner depending circumstances.
Sofia chose divorce.
“I was married.”
She wanted record to say:
The marriage existed.
May you like
And ended.
Not pretend ceremony was unreal.
