Chapter 20 - Alexander Learns to Stay

Alexander had spent his life leaving.

Orders.

Deployments.

Contracts.

Divorce.

Distance.

After Sofia’s trial, he wanted to move back into her life fast.

Weekly dinners.

Security checks.

Financial planning.

She stopped him.

“Dad.”

“Yes?”

“You’re doing it again.”

“What?”

“Trying to make up ten years in ten days.”

He sat back.

“What should I do?”

“Stay available.”

That was harder for him than action.

Then he did.

Texts:

Coffee?

She sometimes said no.

He answered:

Okay.

Birthday:

He asked what she wanted.

“Dinner.”

No car.

No trust increase.

Dinner.

He learned.

Then I asked him once:

“Do you regret giving her the condo?”

“No.”

“Even though Carmen targeted it?”

“No.”

He looked at me.

“Property didn’t cause violence.”

Correct.

Then:

“I regret thinking property could replace presence.”

That was our marriage’s obituary.

I appreciated.

Then no romance.

People around us tried.

“Maybe you two…”

No.

We had become better divorced parents than spouses.

Enough.

Then Sofia met someone?

Not yet.

She did not need romantic repair immediately.

She returned to work.

She was a junior architect before wedding.

Took four months leave.

Then back.

First project:

Affordable housing development.

She laughed at irony.

A woman nearly beaten over luxury property now designing homes.

But not destiny.

Just work she already loved.

Then one colleague asked about scar.

She said:

“Wedding accident.”

Not everyone deserved details.

Then at twenty four, she was promoted.

She bought herself a watch.

First luxury item after case.

I asked:

“Sure?”

She laughed.

“Mom, Carmen does not own expensive things either.”

Good.

Then Alexander’s old security company offered Sofia a job? No.

No nepotism.

She kept her field.

Then title alert.

She left it active.

May you like

Not fear.

Good practice.
