Chapter 10 - The Woman Who Opened the Bathroom Door

Ana came to see Sofia through attorneys.
Sofia almost refused.
Then agreed.
Hospital consultation room.
Ana looked twenty three instead of glamorous cousin from wedding.
No makeup.
Hands shaking.
“I’m sorry.”
Sofia stared.
“You were there.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Aunt Carmen said you were planning to transfer your condo to some other man after marriage.”
Sofia almost laughed.
“What man?”
“She said your father controlled you.”
Alexander waited outside.
Good.
Ana continued.
“She said Javier would lose everything because you were humiliating him.”
“So you came upstairs to what?”
“Talk.”
“Seven women?”
“I know how it sounds.”
“It sounds exactly like what it was.”
Ana cried.
Then:
“When Carmen hit you, I should have called police immediately.”
“Yes.”
“I froze.”
Sofia looked away.
“I heard that from Javier too.”
Ana flinched.
Then:
“I opened the bathroom door.”
“You did.”
“I recorded.”
“You did.”
“Does that matter?”
Sofia considered.
“It matters.”
Ana looked hopeful.
Sofia continued:
“It doesn’t erase the first part.”
Hope disappeared.
“Okay.”
That was accountability.
Then Ana gave another detail.
Before the reception ended, Carmen gathered the women in a private lounge.
She said:
“Sofia is giving Javier the condo tonight.”
Marisol asked:
“Does Sofia know?”
Carmen said:
“She will.”
Some laughed, assuming joke.
Then Carmen handed Rosa and Pilar printed documents.
Ana became uncomfortable.
She texted Javier:
YOUR MOM IS BEING WEIRD.
Javier replied:
LET HER HANDLE IT.
That text mattered.
Then:
Ana:
THIS IS ABOUT THE CONDO?
Javier:
YES. STAY OUT OF IT.
He knew a group was gathering.
Then Ana said:
“I think Carmen wanted us there because she thought Sofia would be ashamed to fight back in front of women.”
A social pressure circle.
Marriage ritual twisted into coercion.
Then Sofia asked:
“Why six?”
Ana whispered:
“Carmen said no bride argues when the whole family agrees.”
That sentence stayed.
Then Marisol’s role.
She had already surrendered medical license review information and cooperated.
She was not accused of assault.
She had brought an emergency medical kit to wedding because older relatives had health issues.
Carmen stole vial.
Marisol intervened.
She later testified.
Teresa too eventually.
She had blocked door but never struck.
She accepted misdemeanor related resolution? Possibly later.
Rosa and Daniela more directly involved.
Pilar locked.
Jessica held phone and sedative.
Different consequences.
Then Sofia said:
“I want each person judged for what they did.”
Not:
Destroy them all.
Alexander looked proud.
May you like
Then stopped himself from saying it.
Good.
