Chapter 23 - Sofia Marries Again

Sofia was thirty one when she met Nathan Carter.
A structural engineer.
Divorced once.
No dramatic billionaire.
No hidden family empire.
They dated two years.
When he proposed, Sofia said:
“Yes.”
Then:
“And we’re doing a prenup.”
Nathan said:
“Okay.”
No wounded pride.
No mother conference.
His parents asked:
“What can we bring to engagement dinner?”
Not:
What property does she own?
That almost made me suspicious because normal felt unfamiliar.
Then wedding planning.
Small.
Eighty guests.
No luxury hotel.
Outdoor museum courtyard.
Sofia chose green dress accents.
Not blue? She wore white gown this time maybe. First wedding she wore blue formal dress in prompt, perhaps as reception dress? But story says wedding dress blue formal. Fine. Second gown ivory simple.
She invited Ana.
Marisol.
Brooke.
Alexander.
Me.
Not Javier.
Not Carmen.
Of course.
Then the night before wedding, Sofia called me.
“I’m scared.”
“Of Nathan?”
“No.”
“The night.”
Memory.
I came over.
No pep talk.
We watched terrible television.
Then Alexander texted:
Need anything?
Sofia replied:
No.
He answered:
Okay.
Perfect.
Wedding day.
Alexander walked her halfway down aisle.
I walked other half.
Sofia had requested both.
Then she stopped before Nathan.
Walked final three steps alone.
Choice.
The symbolism nearly killed Alexander.
He survived.
During vows, Nathan said:
“What is yours remains yours unless you choose to share it.”
Not scripted by us.
Sofia laughed in the middle of ceremony.
Guests confused.
We understood.
Then wedding night.
No locked room.
No documents.
No family meeting.
Nathan asked:
“Do you want to leave early?”
“Yes.”
They left.
No one followed.
Two days later Sofia texted:
ALIVE. VERY MARRIED. NO DEEDS.
May you like
I laughed so hard I cried.
Healing can become humor when enough years pass.
