Chapter 13 - The Seventh Witness
There was one person nobody expected.
A hairstylist named Brooke Palmer.
She had gone back upstairs after reception because Sofia left a family heirloom comb in the bridal suite.
At 1:58 a.m., she approached the honeymoon floor.
She heard screaming.
Then saw Javier.
“What’s happening?”
He said:
“Sofia’s having a panic attack.”
Brooke offered help.
“My sister gets those.”
Javier stepped in front of door.
“No.”
Then inside:
A slap.
Brooke froze.
“That didn’t sound like a panic attack.”
Javier smiled.
“My family is dramatic.”
She left.
But not completely.
At elevator, she turned on phone camera.
Recorded hallway from distance.
Javier paced.
At 2:06, Jessica entered.
Javier handed her something.
The video zoom was poor.
Investigators enhanced only enough to identify shape:
Small black pouch.
Jessica later admitted it contained Marisol’s medical vial and syringe.
There.
Javier had physically passed the sedative to Jessica.
His claim he knew nothing collapsed.
He had obtained it.
How?
Earlier, he removed it from Marisol’s emergency kit after Carmen told him to.
Messages:
CARMEN:
GET SOMETHING TO CALM HER.
JAVIER:
FROM MARISOL?
CARMEN:
YES.
He did.
Did he intend injection?
He claimed he thought it was oral medication.
The pouch contained injectable vial and syringe.
He may not have understood specifics.
Still.
Then Brooke’s video captured something else.
At 2:24, Javier opened the door.
Sofia’s voice:
“I hate you!”
Then Javier:
“Sign it and this stops.”
Clear.
That sentence became the center.
Not:
Mom, stop.
Not:
Are you hurt?
Sign it and this stops.
Coercion.
Then Brooke called hotel front desk after leaving.
Her call became second complaint.
Why did hotel security still not intervene?
Luis Perez again.
He told them:
“I checked. Family matter.”
He had not checked.
He trusted Javier.
The hotel later settled civilly with Sofia for security failures.
Not because hotel planned attack.
Because two independent warnings were mishandled.
They changed wedding event escalation procedures.
Then Brooke testified.
No motive.
No family connection.
A neutral witness.
Javier’s defense became much harder.
Then Sofia asked:
“Why didn’t she call 911?”
Brooke answered through statement:
“I thought I might be misunderstanding.”
That line haunted Sofia.
Then she told her therapist:
“I want people to understand screaming through a hotel door is enough reason to check.”
The hotel agreed.
