Chapter 5 - Why Sofia Stopped Calling Her Father

Sofia had been sixteen when Alexander and I divorced.

The divorce was ugly.

Not violent.

Not secret.

Ugly.

Alexander had spent much of our marriage traveling.

Army assignments.

Then consulting.

He believed providing money was the same as being present.

I resented him.

He resented my resentment.

Sofia got trapped between us.

At seventeen, she told him:

“You always come back with a check instead of an apology.”

He left the room.

At eighteen, he bought the condo.

She accepted.

Then told him:

“I didn’t ask for this.”

He answered badly.

“You’ll understand one day.”

That sounded like control.

So Sofia pulled away.

Alexander sent birthday messages.

She answered some.

Then fewer.

When she became engaged, she mailed him an invitation.

Not because reconciliation.

Because he was father.

He attended ceremony.

Sat in the back.

Did not approach.

Sofia saw him.

Did not wave.

He respected.

Carmen noticed.

After Sofia’s attack, Alexander sat in the hospital chair and said:

“I thought staying away was respecting what you wanted.”

Sofia stared at him.

“It was.”

He nodded.

“Then I should not turn tonight into proof you needed me all along.”

That surprised her.

He continued:

“You needed police. Doctors. Evidence. Your mother.”

Then:

“I’m here because you said yes when she called.”

Sofia’s eyes filled.

“I didn’t say yes.”

I said:

“You didn’t tell me to hang up.”

She almost smiled.

Then Alexander admitted:

“I gave you the condo because I knew I failed at giving you stability in other ways.”

Sofia looked down.

“That doesn’t erase it.”

“I know.”

Good.

Then:

“Did you know Carmen wanted it before the wedding?”

“No.”

“Did you know she asked questions?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you tell me about the title alert?”

Alexander took a long breath.

“Because I was afraid you would think I was using danger to get back into your life.”

“Were you?”

“No.”

Then:

“But fear made me passive.”

Sofia looked at him.

“That sounds familiar.”

Javier.

Standing outside the door.

Passive while she screamed.

Alexander winced.

Fair.

Then Detective Ellison interrupted.

He had another update.

The medication vial.

Laboratory preliminary identification:

Midazolam.

A sedative used in medical settings.

Not something normally carried loose in a designer handbag.

Jessica’s attorney immediately changed strategy.

She said the vial came from Marisol.

Marisol was a nurse practitioner.

Marisol went white when confronted.

Then told investigators:

“Yes. It came from my emergency kit.”

“Why was Jessica carrying it?”

“I didn’t give it to her.”

“What happened?”

During the reception, Carmen asked Marisol:

“Do you have anything that can calm someone having a panic attack?”

Marisol said she had emergency medication but would not use it without proper medical indication.

Later her kit went missing for twenty minutes.

Returned.

One vial gone.

Who had access?

Carmen.

Jessica.

Pilar.

Potential.

No proof yet who removed it.

Then Sofia whispered:

“They really were going to drug me.”

Maybe.

The evidence was getting closer.

Then Ana gave police her phone.

May you like

“I recorded part of it.”

Everyone stopped.
