Chapter 12 - Elena’s Anger

I wanted Carmen destroyed.

There.

I was not as disciplined as Sofia.

For days, I imagined prison.

Bankruptcy.

Public humiliation.

Every photograph of Carmen in handcuffs satisfied something ugly in me.

Then Sofia told me:

“Stop.”

“What?”

“You’re making this yours.”

I stared.

“I’m your mother.”

“I know.”

“She hurt you.”

“I know.”

“I want…”

“That’s the problem.”

She looked exhausted.

“Everybody wants something from me.”

Carmen wanted condo.

Javier wanted obedience.

Alexander wanted to protect.

I wanted revenge.

Sofia wanted room.

I sat down.

“I’m sorry.”

She nodded.

Then:

“I need you to help me heal. Not build your own war.”

That changed me.

Alexander had the same lesson separately.

His old military friends called.

Security consultants.

Lawyers.

One offered:

“We can make the Robles family very uncomfortable.”

Alexander answered:

“No.”

What?

He told me later:

“I wanted to say yes.”

Instead he limited everything to lawful preservation.

No intimidation.

No following witnesses.

No threats.

His security company provided Sofia transport only after police approved.

Then he stepped away from evidence handling.

Good.

Then my own guilt.

I had seen Carmen’s greed.

Why did I not push harder?

Sofia answered:

“Because I told you I loved Javier.”

Yes.

“You respected me.”

Mostly.

Then:

“You did warn me.”

I had.

Not enough to stop wedding.

But adults get to choose partners.

Parents cannot preemptively imprison them in safety.

Then Alexander apologized to me.

“For what?”

“The divorce.”

I laughed.

“Wrong decade.”

“No.”

He said:

“I left you to carry Sofia emotionally while I tried to compensate financially.”

True.

“And now I almost did it again.”

Also true.

No romantic reunion.

We had been over for years.

But we could become parents in same room without reopening marriage.

That mattered.

Then Sofia’s divorce filing.

Javier received.

He signed acknowledgment from custody.

No contest to dissolution.

He requested no spousal support.

No claim to condo.

No wedding gift return except personal items.

His attorney was smart.

Then the wedding expenses.

Carmen had paid about $180,000.

We had paid $45,000.

Alexander had quietly paid venue deposit? Maybe. But irrelevant.

Carmen later tried claiming Sofia owed reimbursement because marriage ended immediately.

Her civil attorney withdrew demand after criminal facts.

Even she could not make wedding invoice sound sympathetic.

Then Sofia asked me:

“Can we throw away my dress?”

I thought.

“Yes.”

She paused.

“No.”

“What?”

“Not yet.”

Evidence photographs existed.

Police eventually returned dress.

She sealed it.

Not as shrine.

May you like

Because she was not ready.

Choice.
