Chapter 8 - Brandon Hale

Brandon Hale’s mother had spent twenty years in politics.

She knew exactly how every sentence sounded.

That made her first conversation with me almost painful.

She requested meeting through victim liaison after Brandon agreed to proffer.

I said no.

Then she sent handwritten note.

Not staff typed.

Mr. Walker,

My son participated in an attack on your daughter.

Whatever legal distinctions exist between initiating violence, restraining Lily, or later telling Ethan to stop, Brandon helped make it possible.

I am sorry.

Then:

I also contacted Northbridge leadership before police had finished initial response because my instinct was to protect my son’s name.

That was wrong.

She admitted.

I gave Lily.

She read.

Then wrote:

SHE’S SMART.

“Meaning?”

KNOWS WHAT TO SAY.

“Do you believe?”

MAYBE.

Fair.

Brandon’s proffer filled gaps.

They met at a restaurant earlier.

Tyler was panicking because Lily had asked lab manager about Marrow credential.

Tyler said:

“If she reports audit, my dad’s company gets dragged into federal review.”

Ethan:

“Then scare her.”

Brandon:

“Don’t.”

Tyler:

“We just take laptop.”

Ethan contacted Sloane.

Brandon knew cameras would be down.

That made him complicit in planned intimidation and theft before violence.

He could not say innocent.

At garage, Tyler demanded backpack.

Lily refused.

She said she had copies elsewhere.

Ethan called her bluff.

Lily said:

“My father taught me not to keep one copy.”

That triggered Tyler mentioning me.

“Your father? Ghost Colonel?”

Lily froze.

Tyler enjoyed.

Then Ethan grabbed backpack strap.

Lily pulled.

She called them criminals.

Ethan punched.

Brandon said:

“Ethan, what the hell?”

Lily tried run.

Brandon grabbed her arms.

Why?

He said instinctively to stop “fight.”

But she was victim.

Then Tyler kicked phone.

Lily struggled.

Ethan hit again.

Brandon released one arm? He claimed. Lily remembered still held.

Tyler shoved/kicked her down.

Ethan struck once after she fell.

Then Brandon yelled:

“Enough.”

He did not help her.

Tyler took backpack.

They left.

In car Brandon said call ambulance.

Ethan refused.

Tyler said a student would find her.

Brandon could have called anonymously.

He didn’t.

Then group chat.

He preserved some messages by screenshot before Tyler ordered delete.

Why?

“Because I got scared they’d blame me.”

Self preservation.

But screenshots became evidence.

Then Tyler’s deeper statements.

On drive away:

“This cannot get to Voss.”

Brandon asked who.

Tyler said:

“Lily’s dad used to bury defense contractors.”

Exaggeration.

Then:

“My dad says Voss destroyed people.”

That came from Victor.

Then Brandon said Tyler planned to give laptop to Gaines.

He heard call:

“Derek, I have it.”

So Derek Gaines knew after assault.

What did Gaines say?

Brandon only heard Tyler:

“No, she’s alive.”

That sounded alarming.

But context unknown.

Did Gaines ask? Later phone extraction.

Call not recorded.

Texts afterward:

GAINES: Bring material to secure office. Do not contact girl again. Call lawyer.

Could be preserving.

Then:

GAINES: What happened?

TYLER: Ethan lost it.

GAINES: Jesus Christ.

This suggested Gaines did not plan assault.

He was involved research access but not violence.

Again separate.

Brandon agreed plead guilty to felony assault participation, conspiracy to steal backpack/evidence, and obstruction? In exchange testimony. Sentence later maybe 3.5 years.

His mother did not demand immunity.

She did, however, ask prosecutor to consider cooperation and youth.

Normal advocacy.

Ethics investigation examined her calls to university/police.

She had not ordered suppression.

But she used official staff resources in personal matter.

Senate ethics committee issued reprimand? Since fictional. Could be public after plea, she steps down from committee leadership temporarily and reimburses costs. She remains senator? Maybe later loses reelection due scandal? Need not make politics too central. Let's decide she announces no reelection after term, partly family/legal. No criminal charge.

Then Brandon asked Lily permission to send apology after sentencing.

She refused initially.

Later.

May you like

No pressure.

Then Noah? not.
