Chapter 15 - What Northbridge Knew

Northbridge University had not ordered Lily attacked.
It had not deleted cameras.
But it had failed in several ways.
Professor Marrow’s credential remained active eight months after death.
Guest access controls allowed Tyler too much reach.
Security vendor privileged accounts were poorly segmented.
Emergency call boxes could be overridden remotely without second approval.
Campus administrators received donor pressure calls and focused on reputation before transparency.
An independent review found no conspiracy at leadership level.
It found governance failure.
That was less dramatic.
More believable.
Northbridge president apologized publicly.
Campus security technology replaced.
Call boxes isolated.
Credential deactivation automated.
Donor influence policy revised.
Research audit controls strengthened.
University offered Lily tuition waiver and medical support.
She hesitated.
“Feels like hush money.”
Lawyer reviewed.
No nondisclosure.
No waiver of claims.
She accepted tuition.
Then civil settlement.
Lily sued? Not immediately. Her attorney filed claims against Ethan/Tyler, security contractor, Cole subsidiary, possibly university negligence. Brandon maybe included.
Eventually mediation.
Medical costs substantial.
Lost semester.
Pain.
Future procedures.
Settlements:
Cole security subsidiary and insurer paid due Sloane’s intentional system disable under employment/coverage disputes.
Northbridge contributed under negligence settlement without admitting liability.
Ethan/ Tyler civil judgments/insurance? Intentional acts often not insured. Family funds cannot simply pay? Families could settle personally. Marcus Cole agreed to fund portion on Ethan's behalf? Could. Whitmore family trust maybe. Let's keep aggregate not flashy.
Lily received structured settlement sufficient to cover medical care, lost education, therapy, and compensation.
Around $2.4 million total across defendants/insurers? User likes dramatic but legal realistic. Given severe assault and institutional failures, plausible high. Let's use $3.1m gross, after fees/medical liens net less. She set structured trust.
She did not become rich revenge figure.
Most invested.
Then she said:
“I’d rather have jaw.”
Obviously.
Money not win.
Then Northbridge honorary? No.
She returned to classes after one year.
Different schedule.
Would she stay same university?
She chose transfer? She wanted finish at Northbridge to not be pushed out. But could be traumatic. Let's have she took two semesters off, then returned part time. Her choice.
No public advocacy career necessarily.
She completed materials engineering.

Then joined private renewable energy materials firm, not defense.
She did not let Aurora define career.
