Chapter 4 - Lily Writes The Truth

When Lily woke after surgery, she could not speak normally.
The swelling made everything slower.
A small whiteboard became her voice.
I sat beside her.
Reyes stayed outside.
No agents hovering.
No questions until doctor approved.
Lily wrote:
YOU CALLED THEM?
She knew immediately.
“The old team?”
She nodded.
“How?”
COIN.
I laughed.
“You knew about coin?”
I FOUND IT WHEN I WAS 14.
I stared.
“Why didn’t you ask?”
YOU WOULD LIE.
Painfully accurate.
“I would have given vague answer.”
SAME.
Then she wrote:
ARE YOU VOSS?
Everything inside me stopped.
“Where did you hear that?”
TYLER.
My hands went cold.
“He called me Voss’s daughter?”
She nodded.
Then:
HE SAID DAD SHOULD HAVE STAYED DEAD.
I leaned forward.
“Exact?”
She wrote slowly.
HE SAID
GHOST COLONEL SHOULD HAVE STAYED BURIED.
That meant Tyler knew more than my public record.
Reyes entered after I called.
He read board.
His face changed.
“Tyler said Ghost Colonel?”
Lily nodded.
Reyes looked at me.
“That nickname wasn’t public.”
“Who knew?”
“Specter people. Some adversary files. Certain contractors involved in old investigations.”
Whitmore Defense had been a contractor back then.
Not target.
Supplier.
Could someone there have seen classified task force references?
Maybe.
Then Lily wrote more.
WHY DID HE KNOW YOU?
“I don’t know.”
That was truth.
Then:
WHAT IS SPECTER?
I looked at Reyes.
He shrugged.
“Your daughter.”
I pulled chair closer.
“I worked on a classified joint task force before you were born. We investigated theft and diversion of military technology and sensitive research.”
Lily stared.
“You knew I served.”
She wrote:
NOT THIS.
“No.”
WHY HIDE?
“Because I wanted you to have a life that didn’t inherit mine.”
She looked toward bruises.
Point made.
I closed eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
She wrote:
NOT NOW.
Then attack.
Doctors approved brief questions.
Detective Ellis and federal agent Chen entered.
Lily wrote.
She had been assigned as a student assistant on internal lab compliance audit.
Not espionage.
Routine.
The university had detected unusual downloads from Aurora Nine project repository.
Lily helped compare physical lab access with digital logs.
She noticed deceased professor Marrow’s credential was authenticating downloads.
Then Tyler’s guest ID appeared at same times.
She copied audit entries because she planned show lab director next morning.
Why not immediately?
She wanted confirm.
That evening Tyler texted her.
How get number?
Lab group list.
Message:
We should talk before you embarrass yourself tomorrow.
She ignored.
After leaving library, she walked to garage.
Ethan, Brandon, Tyler waiting near her car.
They did not begin with violence.
Tyler asked:
“Where’s the copy?”
She denied.
Ethan called her liar.
Brandon tried to take backpack.
Lily resisted.
Then Tyler said:
“You think your father can help?”
She froze.
He called me Ghost Colonel.
That told her he knew.
She asked how.
Tyler said:
“My family knew what your father was before you did.”
Then Lily told him she was reporting.
Ethan hit first.
A punch.
She fell against pillar.
Brandon grabbed arms when she tried to fight back.
Tyler kicked her phone.
She screamed.
Ethan hit again.
Who broke jaw? Medical cannot assign exact. Multiple impacts.
Tyler took backpack.
Brandon said stop at some point?
Lily wrote:
BRANDON SAID ENOUGH AFTER I FELL.
Important.
Ethan continued once more.
Tyler said:
“Take the bag. We’re done.”
They left.
Lily crawled toward emergency phone.
Dead.
She made it to ramp.
A student found.
Then names.
She had paper in pocket from lab notes and wrote before paramedics? Actually paper maybe she wrote names before losing? She said she wrote during waiting for ambulance because feared forgetting. Good.
Ellis asked:
“Did any one threaten death?”
Lily thought.
NO.
“Did anyone say they would make you disappear?”
TYLER SAID:
NO ONE WILL BELIEVE YOU OVER US.
Then:
ETHAN SAID:
OUR FAMILIES FIX WORSE.
That matched.
No melodramatic literal threat.
Then Brandon.
HE LOOKED SCARED AFTER.
“Did he help you?”
NO.
“Call ambulance?”
NO.
“Still left.”
YES.
Then Lily wrote:
BACKPACK HAS LAPTOP.
We knew.
Then:
USB IN LINING.
“What?”
She had hidden a small encrypted USB in backpack lining.
That may still be with Tyler.
Chen:
“What’s on it?”
FULL AUDIT EXPORT.
Kane would love.
Then Lily suddenly wrote:
TYLER DID NOT WANT FILE ONLY.
“What else?”
HE WANTED PHOTO OF MARROW.
We had one photograph of Tyler in lab.
“Why Marrow?”
Lily shook head.
Then:
THERE WAS A MAN WITH HIM IN LAB.
“Who?”
DON’T KNOW.
OLDER.
WHITMORE BADGE.
That widened.
Tyler had not acted alone in research theft.
But assault still three.
Then she wrote one final sentence.
DAD.
“Yes?”
DON’T BECOME HIM.
I knew who she meant without asking.
Voss.
The man she had just learned existed.
I took her hand.
“I won’t.”
May you like
She squeezed.
That promise guided everything after.
