Chapter 19 - Lily’s Third Surgery

Recovery was not one montage.

It took two years.

First surgery stabilized.

Second corrected alignment.

Third removed hardware and addressed chronic pain.

Physical therapy.

Jaw exercises.

Nutrition.

Dental work.

Headaches.

One numb patch along lower lip that improved but never completely vanished.

That became permanent minor injury.

She hated cold weather there.

We did not pretend perfect.

Psychological recovery.

Nightmares decreased.

Parking garages were hard.

She parked outside even in rain.

Therapist used gradual exposure.

Eventually she entered garage with Emily? There is no Emily; widowed. Maybe with friend Ava. She went with me once.

At entrance she froze.

“We can leave.”

“No.”

“You don’t have to prove.”

“I know.”

She went one level.

Then out.

Months later two levels.

Eventually normal enough, though never favorite.

Then dating.

She had boyfriend before attack? Not in source. Could be no.

She avoided intimacy for time because face/body.

Later dated.

No need.

Then jaw scar.

People stared less than she thought.

She learned makeup? Not important.

Then court dates prolonged.

Ethan appeal.

Tyler federal sentencing.

Brandon release.

Each reopened.

Therapist taught boundaries around news.

She stopped reading comments.

Then public called her brave.

She hated.

“I got beaten.”

“You survived.”

“Doesn’t mean brave.”

“You reported despite fear.”

“Maybe.”

No need label.

Then graduation.

Northbridge engineering auditorium.

She walked stage.

I stood too quickly and clapped like idiot.

Reyes attended secretly? He came as family friend.

Lily rolled eyes.

After:

“Dad, you cried.”

“No.”

“Reyes has video.”

“Traitor.”

Then job.

She chose Solstice Materials, renewable energy components.

No defense clearance.

May you like

She wanted sunlight.

Good.
