Chapter 12 - The Senator’s Call
Senator Margaret Hale’s role became public during Brandon’s plea.
Not because prosecutors charged her.
Because journalists obtained university call logs through records requests and her office disclosed internal ethics review.
She had used Senate staff to call Northbridge president and local officials after Brandon told her he was involved.
No threat.
No quid pro quo.
But personal use of official resources and appearance of influence.
Ethics committee opened inquiry.
Margaret cooperated.
She reimbursed costs.
She stepped aside from Armed Services subcommittee leadership during review.
Later received formal letter of admonition for misuse of staff resources and failure to avoid appearance of interference.
No criminal case.
Some people online demanded prison.
Evidence did not support.
I told Lily:
“Accountability has to match conduct.”
She nodded.
Then Brandon’s plea.
He admitted:
Conspiracy to take Lily’s laptop/backpack.
Felony participation in assault because he restrained her while Ethan struck.
Tampering by leaving and deleting group chat.
He testified against Ethan and Tyler.
Prosecutors recommended three years eight months with supervised release/probation after.
Judge imposed three years six months.
Why less?
No prior record.
Cooperation.
He attempted verbally to stop after escalation.
Still held.
Still left.
He served.
Before sentencing he read statement:
“I told myself I wasn’t the one hitting her.”
Then:
“That was how I avoided admitting she could not protect herself because I was holding her.”
Lily watched remotely? She chose not attend. Read later.
He wrote apology through advocate.
Lily accepted delivery six months later.
Brandon wrote:
I do not expect forgiveness.
I helped put you in position where Ethan could hurt you.
I left.
I am sorry.
Lily did not reply for a year.
Then:
I received your letter.
Nothing else.
That was enough.
Margaret visited son in custody.
She did not ask Lily for leniency again.
After term, she announced she would not seek reelection.
She said family reasons and accountability.
No need political advocacy.
