Chapter 6 - The Families Arrive

Marcus Cole came to the police station with two attorneys.

He did not threaten.

He looked sick.

That mattered.

Ethan had apparently told him:

“A girl attacked us after accusing Tyler.”

Then claimed Ethan only defended Brandon.

Marcus believed enough to hire counsel.

When confronted with camera sabotage by Cole employee, Marcus’s expression changed.

“I did not authorize that.”

Investigators believed perhaps.

His phone and emails later supported.

No message before attack.

No instruction.

After he learned at 11:30, he called university president.

That was troubling.

What did he say?

“My son may be involved in an incident. Preserve records and call counsel.”

Not “erase.”

Then Sloane had disabled independently at Ethan’s request.

Marcus fired him after counsel? He couldn't retaliate maybe after charges. Company suspended.

Cole family was powerful.

But Marcus was not mastermind.

Then Senator Margaret Hale.

She arrived with federal ethics counsel and Brandon’s criminal attorney.

She had called Northbridge president at 11:18, before police contacted Brandon officially.

How know?

Brandon called her.

He said:

“There was a fight and Tyler took a girl’s bag.”

Margaret told president:

“My son is involved in an incident. Please ensure no names are released before facts.”

She also called police captain? Her chief of staff called city liaison asking whether press had information.

Pressure?

Yes.

Obstruction?

Not necessarily.

She did not order evidence destroyed.

But Detective Ellis had felt pressure because captain received calls from city administration after university donors/officials became nervous.

Margaret later admitted she used status reflexively.

An ethics issue maybe, not criminal.

Then Victor Whitmore.

Different.

He refused voluntary interview.

Company counsel.

Search warrants.

His son Tyler’s attack charge.

His company under federal probe.

Victor released statement:

“Whitmore Defense condemns violence and will cooperate with lawful process.”

Corporate.

Then internal communications showed Victor at 11:44 texted Graham Pike:

Secure Tyler’s materials. No one outside legal sees anything.

Could mean preserve for counsel.

Not necessarily destroy.

But another:

Find out what Walker girl copied.

That suggested concern.

Then:

Who is her father?

Pike:

Daniel Walker, security consultant.

Victor:

Run Voss.

Voss.

He knew alias.

Company security database returned old restricted reference.

How did Whitmore possess?

Historical contractor security records.

Twenty years earlier, Whitmore Electronics supported Specter operations.

Victor had been executive VP.

He knew task force codename perhaps.

When Tyler called after attack and said Lily’s father was Daniel Walker, Victor connected to Voss.

Did he tell Tyler before?

Tyler already knew Ghost Colonel.

Evidence needed.

Tyler’s texts with father weeks earlier:

TYLER: Walker’s daughter is on audit team.

VICTOR: Daniel Walker?

TYLER: Yeah.

VICTOR: Stay away from her.

TYLER: Why?

VICTOR: Her father used to be Voss.

TYLER: Ghost Colonel?

VICTOR: Do not be stupid.

That was stunning.

Victor told him.

And told him stay away.

This helped Victor regarding assault.

But also showed classified-ish legacy knowledge.

How did Tyler learn nickname?

From father.

Then another text after Lily confronted:

TYLER: She found Marrow access.

VICTOR: Call Gaines. Do nothing yourself.

Tyler ignored.

So Victor had warned.

But knew Marrow access scheme.

That implicated him in research diversion.

Then Derek Gaines.

Vice president of Whitmore Advanced Materials.

The older man.

Investigators searched.

He lawyered.

His emails with Tyler showed he had instructed Tyler to use dormant university credentials to retrieve files that Whitmore believed it had contractual rights to access but no longer did.

Could be illegal unauthorized access.

Why use Meridian?

Gaines had consulting agreement.

Payments.

Then overseas link.

This became federal.

Victor claimed Gaines acted beyond authority.

But one board memo showed Victor approved “competitive acquisition pathways” through Meridian.

Not specific illegal hacking.

Need gradual.

Then families’ public image.

News leaked attack after charges? We can show later.

For now, sealed grand jury.

Then Marcus Cole asked to speak with me through lawyers.

I refused.

Margaret Hale sent message:

“I am sorry for what happened to Lily.”

I read.

No reply.

Victor none.

Then Lily.

She watched all this from hospital, unable to eat normally.

I sat.

She wrote:

ARE THEY ARRESTED?

“Not yet.”

WHY?

“Investigations take time.”

RICH PEOPLE.

I smiled sadly.

“Even without money, probable cause still has process.”

She stared.

“Would you want them arrested badly?”

She wrote:

YES.

“Me too.”

Then:

BUT NOT WRONG.

I squeezed her hand.

That was my daughter.

May you like

She wanted consequences.

Not shortcuts.
