Chapter 13 - Ethan Says It Was An Accident
Ethan Cole went to trial.
He had declined plea requiring admission he intentionally assaulted Lily.
His defense theory:
A confrontation over alleged research theft became chaotic.
Lily grabbed Tyler’s backpack? No.
Ethan tried separate.
Lily fell.
Some injuries from pillar/floor.
The first punch?
He claimed he pushed her shoulder.
Blood on cuff from helping? No.
Then Brandon testified.
“I saw Ethan punch her.”
Defense:
“You got plea.”
“Yes.”
“You benefit.”
“Yes.”
“Could Tyler have?”
“He did later. Ethan punched first.”
Then Lily.
She testified through accommodations after recovery enough.
Not behind screen, but court allowed breaks.
Her jaw had undergone second corrective procedure months earlier.
She spoke clearly but tired.
“What happened?”
“Ethan hit me.”
“How many?”
“I remember at least three impacts from him. I can’t say every injury came from which person.”
Excellent.
No exaggeration.
“Brandon?”
“Held my arms.”
“Tyler?”
“Destroyed my phone, took my backpack, knocked me down.”
“Did you strike any first?”
“No.”
Defense attacked memory due concussion.
Lily said:
“There are parts after I hit ground that are blurry.”
Honest.
“Could Ethan have been trying to help?”
“No.”
“How sure?”
“He called me trash while he hit me.”
Then group chat.
You broke her face.
Sloane camera sabotage.
Ethan’s message kill cameras + boxes.
His blood evidence.
The defense argued bravado.
Jury deliberated nine hours.
Convicted of aggravated assault, conspiracy to commit theft/robbery, obstruction/evidence tampering related to camera shutdown.
Not convicted on one count alleging premeditated severe bodily injury because jury found assault escalated rather than planned to fracture jaw specifically.
That distinction mattered.
Sentence:
Eleven years effective with possibility/credits, plus restitution and supervision.
Longer than Brandon because principal violence and planned system disabling.
Marcus Cole gave no statement to media beyond:
“We respect process.”
He privately wrote Lily again.
She eventually replied:
Your son’s choices are his. I appreciate that you did not try to erase them after you knew.
That was generous.
Then Cole Urban.
Sloane’s cooperation.
Company internal review found poor privileged access controls and culture allowing executives’ children informal influence.
Marcus implemented reforms under university/federal settlement.
Civil penalty.
Northbridge ended contract.
Cole Urban paid Lily’s civil settlement? Later.
Then Ethan in custody began appeals.
Conviction affirmed after two years except one obstruction count merged, reducing sentence by months, not outcome.
