Chapter 5 - The False Guarantee

The forged guarantee mattered more than the affair.

Vale Strategic Capital had promised to finance Blackwood’s repurchase of Hart trust property.

But Vanessa’s company had no money.

Where would financing come from?

Bank documents eventually answered.

North Meridian Private Bank had issued a conditional loan proposal.

Borrower:

Blackwood Holdings Acquisition LLC.

Collateral:

Mansion after repurchase.

Secondary guarantee:

Evelyn Blackwood personal assets.

Supporting schedule listed:

Hart Heritage beneficial interest.

My beneficial interest.

They planned to use my trust interest to help finance buying property from the very trust that held it.

I stared at the structure.

“Impossible.”

Jonah nodded.

“Without your real consent, yes.”

“Would bank catch?”

“Likely during final diligence.”

“Then why try?”

“Maybe they expected to get your consent later.”

Or force it.

Julian had started pressuring me for signatures months earlier.

“Estate planning.”

“Family simplification.”

“Tax housekeeping.”

I refused because I read documents.

That had annoyeded him.

Then Vanessa appeared more often.

Then arguments.

Then earrings.

Then wine room.

A performance.

What if the goal was not apology?

What if they wanted me emotional enough to sign something afterward?

Lock me downstairs.

Scare me.

Then bring paper.

I asked Penny’s forensic interviewer later whether Penny remembered adults discussing papers.

The answer came through proper channels.

Penny said:

“Daddy told Miss Vanessa Mom would sign tomorrow because she would be scared.”

My body went cold.

The interviewer did not ask leading questions.

Penny volunteered after being asked what she heard adults say that night.

That was strong.

Not conclusive.

Julian’s phone was seized during arrest incident? Police could inspect only with warrant. Later prosecutors obtained warrant based on assault and fraud referrals.

Messages recovered:

Vanessa:

She won’t sign willingly.

Julian:

She will after tonight.

Vanessa:

What if she calls Damian?

Julian:

She barely speaks to him.

Vanessa:

You sure?

Julian:

Evelyn wants nothing to do with Hart money.

That part was almost true.

I had kept my distance from family wealth.

Not from Damian.

We spoke.

Less than before.

Still.

Julian mistook privacy for estrangement.

Then:

Vanessa:

Need guarantee before bank closes quarter.

Julian:

I know.

There.

The assault was connected to financial pressure.

Did that make it premeditated?

Potentially in some respects.

Prosecutors would decide.

I refused to tell newspapers anything.

No “revenge interview.”

No social media.

Penny mattered more.

Family court granted me temporary primary custody.

Julian received no direct contact pending child safety assessment because Penny witnessed violence and was locked in basement.

Not permanent.

Temporary.

Julian’s attorney argued I was using criminal case to alienate child.

Maya responded:

“We are following court orders.”

Exactly.

No dramatic threats.

Then Vanessa tried to distance herself.

Her attorney contacted prosecutors.

She wanted cooperation.

Too early.

They listened.

She claimed Julian invented the entire plan.

Evidence later showed otherwise.

One email from her:

If she won’t sign, make her afraid of losing Penny.

Not innocent.

May you like

But maybe useful.

The cracks began.
