Chapter 20 - Damian Steps Back

Damian resigned as administrative chair of Hart Heritage Trust when he turned forty seven.

Not because scandal.

Succession planning.

He appointed independent corporate trustee permanently.

I approved as beneficiary.

He said:

“I don’t want Penny thinking Uncle Damian owns everything.”

“Good.”

“Also I’m tired.”

“Better reason.”

Hart Meridian remained his company, though diversified ownership.

He married late.

A physician named Claire? We already used user names? No need introduce. Let's say Dr. Hannah Cole. Small role. Penny loved her.

Damian’s life stopped revolving around rescue.

That was healthy.

One evening he asked:

“Do you still have emergency phone?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

“Throw it away.”

“No.”

He smiled.

“Then you’re not healed.”

“Or sentimental.”

“About a dead Nokia?”

“Black phone.”

“Same.”

I kept.

Not because I needed call.

Because it reminded me I had called.

Important difference.

People often say strength is leaving.

Sometimes strength is asking for help after years of believing asking means weakness.

My brother did not save me.

He answered.

I saved myself with help.

That wording mattered.

Then Julian’s release date approached.

After six years and change, considering credits and appellate reduction, he would reenter supervision.

Penny was thirteen.

Not seven.

Family court order required no unsupervised contact without updated evaluation.

Julian requested evaluation.

I could oppose.

I didn’t.

Maya asked:

“You sure?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because Penny wants option.”

Evaluator met Julian.

Therapist.

Penny.

Me.

Recommended:

Public supervised visits initially.

No overnight.

No entry to my home.

No contact with Vanessa.

No discussion of litigation.

No discipline authority initially.

Gradual review.

Reasonable.

First meeting in park café.

Penny looked at him for thirty seconds.

“You’re old.”

Julian laughed.

“I am.”

“Mom looks younger.”

“I’m sure she told you to say that.”

Penny’s face hardened instantly.

“No.”

He realized.

“Sorry. Bad joke.”

Good correction.

They talked.

At end he asked:

“Can I hug you?”

Penny looked at me.

I said:

“Your choice.”

She hugged him briefly.

I cried in car afterward.

May you like

Not jealousy.

Grief for the father he could have been.
