Chapter 19 - The Woman in the Mirror

For years, I avoided mirrors after the assault.
Not because scars.
Most bruises faded.
Lip healed.
Shoulder recovered.
No visible permanent marks.
But when I saw myself, I saw the woman standing in wine room counting.
Therapy changed that slowly.
At forty, I gave a presentation to twenty risk officers.
First big room since leaving Asterion.
Topic:
Governance Under Stress.
Not my marriage.
Business.
Afterward someone asked:
“Are you the Evelyn Hart from the Blackwood case?”
My stomach tightened.
“Yes.”
“I’m sorry.”
“Thank you.”
Then:
“Your work is excellent.”
I nearly cried.
Identity returned.
Not because headlines.
Work.
Penny came to office sometimes.
She drew on whiteboard.
“Mom, what is liquidity?”
“Money being available when needed.”
“So snacks are liquid?”
“Not remotely.”
She laughed.
I taught her nothing about family trust beyond age appropriate basics.
She knew we were comfortable.
Not rich as identity.
She got allowance.
Had chores.
Normal.
Damian complained:
“You make a Hart child take out trash?”
“She lives in house.”
“Monstrous.”
He took trash out when visiting.
Penny called him easy.
Then Julian became eligible for a lower security facility after good behavior.
His letters remained appropriate.
Family court allowed monthly video.
Penny wanted.
I sometimes sat outside room.
Sometimes not.
One day she asked him:
“Do you still love Vanessa?”
He paused.
“No.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
“Did Mom know?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you just divorce?”
He looked down.
“Because I wanted everything.”
Penny’s face changed.
“What does that mean?”
“I wanted your mom, you, Vanessa, house, company. I didn’t want to lose anything, so I tried to control everyone.”
That was the most honest thing I had heard from him.
Penny said:
“That was dumb.”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Are you still like that?”
“I hope less.”
Not “no.”
Good.
After call, Penny asked me:
“Could you be married again?”
“To someone?”
“Yes.”
“Maybe.”
“Do you want?”
“Not now.”
She nodded.
“Good.”
I laughed.
“Why?”
May you like
“I like our house quiet.”
Me too.
