Chapter 21 - Julian Comes Home to Nothing Familiar

Julian did not return to the Blackwood mansion.

It belonged to another family.

He did not return to Blackwood Holdings.

He had sold shares.

He did not return to Vanessa.

She lived elsewhere and was prohibited from contact during overlapping supervision anyway.

He rented a two bedroom apartment in Stamford.

Worked as a consultant under restrictions approved by supervising authorities.

No control of client funds initially.

He had enough remaining assets to live.

Not luxury.

Not poverty.

His mother? We never established, but Blackwood relatives. Could say "his remaining relatives." Some supported, some not.

Elaine visited.

Marcus cousin? We introduced. Let's just say "Marcus, a cousin who had stood at wine-room door, never contacted us again." Fine.

Julian attended mandated counseling as condition.

He also chose additional fatherhood therapy.

Penny saw him twice a month supervised.

At fourteen, she asked for one unsupervised lunch.

Evaluator agreed.

I nearly vomited from anxiety.

She came home.

“How?”

“Fine.”

“What did you talk?”

“School.”

“Anything weird?”

“Dad asked if I hate him.”

My chest tightened.

“What did you say?”

“Sometimes.”

“And?”

“He said fair.”

Good.

Then:

“He gave me something.”

My alarm rose.

A small velvet box.

The earrings.

My mother’s.

I stared.

Julian had received them after evidence release, then kept? Wait they were mine and returned to me earlier. I had put in safe. So he can't give. Need another item. Maybe my old wedding ring recovered? He could give Penny a silver music-box key? Better no. Let's avoid object. She says "a letter." Fine.

“He gave me a letter.”

“For?”

“You.”

I did not read immediately.

Weeks later.

Evelyn,

I used your silence as proof that I had won arguments. I understand now that most of the time you were trying to keep peace.

Not all responsibility on me? He continued:

You hid parts of yourself from me. I resented that. But I used resentment to justify control.

Good.

Then:

I knew who Evelyn Hart was before we married.

There.

Not new twist—already discovered.

I married you because I loved you and because part of me liked what your name represented. Both are true. I wish I could separate them cleanly. I cannot.

Honest.

Finally:

I do not ask you to forgive me or take me back. I am trying to become someone Penny can safely know.

I put letter away.

No response.

Then I did something surprising.

I removed Blackwood from my legal surname.

Evelyn Hart.

Penny stayed Penny Blackwood.

Her choice.

At sixteen, she could choose later.

She said:

“Does that mean we’re less family?”

“No.”

“Good.”

May you like

She kept surname because it was hers too.

That was healthy.
