Chapter 10 - Blackwood Holdings

Julian’s company looked successful.

Blackwood Holdings controlled:

Two boutique hotels.

A vineyard interest.

Three commercial buildings.

A luxury events company.

And debt.

A lot.

The financial audit ordered by lenders after fraud allegations found leverage far beyond what investors believed.

No illegal activity automatically.

Just dangerous.

Debt service had been covered partly through asset sales.

The mansion repurchase plan mattered because Julian wanted to refinance against it.

A trophy asset with apparent equity could stabilize balance sheet.

But because Hart trust owned title, he could not use it.

Hence repurchase.

Hence my guarantee.

Hence pressure.

The affair and fraud intersected with business survival.

Not because Vanessa was genius.

Because desperation makes people accept bad plans.

Julian had also transferred $380,000 of Blackwood corporate funds to Vale Strategic Capital labeled “acquisition consulting.”

Did Vanessa perform services?

Some.

Due diligence.

Lender introductions.

Valuation.

Maybe $80,000 worth.

The rest questionable.

Blackwood minority investors sued.

Board removed Julian as CEO temporarily pending investigation.

He called Damian.

Not me.

“How much do you want?”

Damian recorded? He did not record without checking state law. Better his counsel present on call. He said through counsel.

“What do you mean?” Damian asked.

“To end property default.”

“Independent trustees decide.”

“Don’t bullshit me.”

Damian hung up.

He told me later.

I said:

“Good.”

No private deals.

The Blackwood family tried another route.

Elaine called.

“Julian’s mother wants you to drop charges.”

“I don’t control charges.”

“I told her.”

“What does she want?”

“She says Penny needs her father.”

“Penny needs a safe father.”

“She says you’re humiliating them.”

I laughed.

“Elaine.”

“I know.”

Then Elaine surprised me.

“I’m leaving the family company.”

“Why?”

“I’m tired.”

She had held a small board role.

Her testimony made her a traitor inside family.

She chose to leave.

Not heroism.

Cost.

That mattered.

One of the guards, Thomas Reed, lost his job when Blackwood security contract changed.

Hart trust offered him nothing.

Good.

No rewarding witnesses through interested party.

He found work elsewhere.

Then Penny’s supervised therapeutic contact with Julian was considered.

Her therapist said no initially.

Penny became nauseated when his name came up.

Court delayed.

Julian called it alienation.

Evaluator disagreed.

“Child’s fear is consistent with witnessed violence and confinement.”

Temporary no contact continued.

I had mixed feelings.

Part of me wanted him to see consequence.

Part feared Penny would lose father permanently.

Therapist said:

“You do not have to solve five years from now.”

Good.

We lived month by month.

Then I returned to work.

Not Asterion.

My tiny consulting firm, Hart Risk Analytics.

One client asked:

“Are you the Evelyn Hart from Asterion?”

“Yes.”

“Why did you never say?”

“Because I didn’t want to.”

That was enough.

I started taking more projects.

Not revenge career.

Not public comeback.

Work steadied me.

Numbers stayed where placed.

Then an old colleague sent a message:

Blackwood lenders are asking who built the repurchase model.

I froze.

“What model?”

They sent file.

A spreadsheet used to convince bank the mansion transaction was viable.

Author metadata:

EHart_Model_v3

May you like

My old naming convention.

Julian had used one of my models.
