Recovery became ordinary work.
Physical therapy three times weekly.
Occupational therapy.
School tutoring.
Rest.
Lily hated walker.
Then loved it.
Then hated again.
Her balance improved slowly.
At first she could stand thirty seconds unsupported.
Then one minute.
Then walk kitchen without holding counters.
Every milestone made her suspicious.
“Does this mean I’m normal?”
“You’re Lily.”
“Dad.”
“What?”
“I mean will people stop treating me sick?”
“Eventually.”
“Will you?”
“I’m trying.”
